POWERS OF
THE MIND
LESSON 6
OBJECTIVES:
• Discuss that understanding the
right and left brain may help in
improving one’s learning.
• Explore two types of mind-mapping
techniques, each suited to right
brain or left brain dominant
thinking styles.
• Make a plan to improve learning
using left and right brain through
mind mapping activities.
How the Brain
Works? • To understand how
the brain works, a
basic knowledge of
the parts of the brain
will help.
• The brain can be
divided into four
separate lobes:
1. Frontal Lobe
2. Temporal lobe
FRONTAL LOBE

FRONTAL PRIMARY MOTOR

• Damage to the corpus collosum forces the two
hemispheres of the brain to work independently because
the connection between them is no longer there.
• Split-brain surgery which was done by severing the
corpus callosum to alleviate epileptic seizure, allowed
researchers to study the resulting concequences and how
each hemisphere of the brain function independently.
• Their research shows that the brain activity in each
hemisphere is associated with certain brain function.
• Fueled by the split-brain research
Roger Sperry suggest that

• Individuals whose left-brain is
more dominant prefer analysis
and inductive reasoning and
learned in steps.
• Individuals whose right brain is
more dominant prefer global
thinking and deductive reasoning
and learned better by
understanding the broad-concept

MAPS
possible aid to learning is
mind-mapping.
• Mind-mapping is described as
a technique where ideas
branch from a central image.
• Studies found that the mind-
mapping technique enhanced
learning by helping students
to remember and understand
information.
• Buzan recommends some
MIND steps to follow when making
MAPS
mind map:
1. Create a central idea. Place it
at the middle of the paper.
include an image.
2.Add branches to the map. Main
branches are from the central
idea but one continue to add
child branches.
3.Add keywords using one word
per branches.
4.Color code the branches.
5.Include images.
