Sound Representation
Sound Representation
Representation
How Sound is Sampled & Stored
•Measurements of the original sound wave are captured and stored as
binary on secondary storage.
•The digital wave is stored on secondary storage and can be played back at
any time by reversing the process.
How Sound is Sampled & Stored
Bit depth
Sample rate
•In this example, the grey line represents the digital wave that has been
created by taking samples of the original analogue wave.
•In order for the digital wave to look more like the analogue wave the
sample rate and bit depth can be changed.
Sample Rate and Bit Depth
Sample rate
•The number of audio samples taken per second. A higher sample rate
means a more accurate representation of the original sound wave.
Bit depth
•The number of bits used to represent each audio sample. A higher bit
depth means better sound reproduction and a higher dynamic
Bit Rate
Bit rate
•This is the amount of data processed per second of audio and is typically
measured in kilobits per second (kbps).
•Bit rate is influenced by both the sample rate and the bit depth (the
number of bits used per sample).
•It indicates the overall quality and data size of the audio file.
