Modeling and Simulation
• Student: M. Hammad Waseem
• Seat No: B20102089 Introduction to Modeling and Simulation • Definition: Modeling and simulation involve creating and analyzing mathematical representations of real-world systems to predict their behavior over time. • Importance: Used across industries like logistics, healthcare, manufacturing, and port services to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Objectives of the Course • Understand key concepts of queuing theory and discrete-event simulation. • Develop simulation models for analyzing and optimizing real-world systems. • Apply simulation techniques to port services and logistics case studies. Key Concepts • Queuing Theory: Mathematical study of waiting lines. • Discrete-Event Simulation: Models the behavior of systems as sequences of events occurring at discrete points in time. • Applications: Logistics, healthcare, manufacturing, and service industries. Case Study Overview • Title: A Discrete-Event Simulation Model for Port Services • Focus: Analysis of waiting line systems in container loading and unloading at the port of Barranquilla. • Objective: Optimize resource allocation and reduce waiting times. Problem Statement • Long waiting times at container loading/unloading points. • Lack of formal queuing models to analyze system efficiency. • Need to minimize operational costs and improve service rates. Methodology • Data Collection: 1,458 records from port activities (2017-2018). • Simulation Model: Developed using discrete- event simulation techniques. • Software: Statgraphics Centurion XVIII for statistical analysis. • Simulations: 30 simulations performed for each process (Export and Import). Simulation Model Structure • Components: Arrival of containers, Service process (loading/unloading), Queue formation and discipline. • Performance Metrics: Average waiting time, System utilization rate, Total operational costs. Results and Analysis • Exports: Average wait time: 0.701 minutes, System utilization rate: 23.72%. • Imports: Average wait time: 0.551 minutes, System utilization rate: 22.21%. Conclusion • Discrete-event simulation is effective in analyzing port logistics systems. • Results highlight the need to optimize service channels and resource allocation. • Further automation and reduction of operators can lower costs.
