Understanding Probabilitystudents

The document provides an overview of probability, defining key terms such as experiment, outcome, event, and sample space. It includes a formula for calculating the probability of an event based on the number of outcomes and the sample space. Additionally, it presents examples of calculating probabilities using a coin toss and a die throw.

AND
PROBABILITY
PROBABILITY - a field of Mathematics that deals with
chance.
An EXPERIMENT - is an activity in which the results cannot
be predicted with certainty. Each repetition of an experiment
is called a TRIAL.
An OUTCOME –is a result of an experiment. An EVENT is any
collection of outcomes, and a SIMPLE EVENT is an event
with only one possible outcome.
The SAMPLE SPACE for a given experiments is a set S
that contains all possible outcomes of the experiment.
PROBABILITY OF AN EVENT FORMULA

n(event) - number of outcomes of the event,

n (Sample Space) – number of all possible outcomes
The sample space for the experiment in
throwing a die

Sample Space (S) =

{1,2,3,4,5,6}
Probability of an event
Example 1: A coin is tossed, find the probability of
getting a head.

First, find the sample space

S = {head, tail}
n (Sample Space) – number of all possible outcomes

Then, the probability of getting a head

P(head) =
P(black) = = =
P(face) = = =
P(not face) = = =
P(3) = =
P(even) = = =
P(zero) = = =0
P(>4) = = =
P(between 0 and 7) = = =1
