Association Rule Mining:
Support, Confidence & Lift
A simple example to understand key
concepts
What is Association Rule Mining?
• Association Rule Mining is used to find
relationships between items in large datasets.
• Example: Market Basket Analysis – Finding
products frequently bought together.
Dataset (Transactions)
Transactions:
1: Bread, Milk
2: Bread, Diaper, Beer, Eggs
3: Milk, Diaper, Beer, Coke
4: Bread, Milk, Diaper, Beer
5: Bread, Milk, Diaper, Coke
Step 1: Calculate Support
• Support(Diaper → Beer) = Transactions
containing both / Total Transactions
• = 3/5 = 0.6 (60%)
Step 2: Calculate Confidence
• Confidence(Diaper → Beer) = Support(Diaper
& Beer) / Support(Diaper)
• = 3/4 = 0.75 (75%)
Step 3: Calculate Lift
• Lift(Diaper → Beer) = Confidence(Diaper →
Beer) / Support(Beer)
• = 0.75 / 0.6 = 1.25
• Interpretation:
• - Lift > 1: Positive correlation (likely to be
bought together)
• - Lift = 1: No correlation
• - Lift < 1: Negative correlation
Final Summary
Rule: Diaper → Beer
Support: 0.6 (60%)
Confidence: 0.75 (75%)
Lift: 1.25
Conclusion: Customers buying Diapers are more likely to buy Beer.
