The document discusses the micro-processor, highlighting the Intel 4004 as the first single chip micro-processor released in 1971. It defines a micro-processor as the CPU of a computer that performs operations based on programmed instructions and outlines its advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, it describes the types of operations, functions, and various pins associated with micro-processors.

Micro-Processor

• Intel 4004 was the first single chip micro-

processor which was released in november
1971 by intel corp.
• Intel 4004 was invented by Marcian Ted Hoff
with the support of stanley mazor and
federico faggin.

What is micro-processor?

• Micro-Processor is an electronic circuit that

functions as the central processing unit (CPU)
of a computer, providing computational
control.
• The micro-processor, (or CPU), is the brain of
the computer.
• A micro-processor is “a component that
implements memory.”
Operation Types in a Micro-Processor

• All of the operations of the micro-processor

can be classified into three types:
- Micro-processor Initiated Operations
- Internal Operations
- Peripheral Initiated Operations
Function of Micro-Processor

• The Micro-Processor can be programmed to

perform functions on given data by writing
specific instructions into its memory:
• The microprocessor reads one instruction at a
time, matches it with its instruction set, and
performs the data manipulation specified.
• The result is either stored back into memory or
displayed on an output device.
Micro-Processor Pins

• Control & Status Signal

• I/O : Serial Input / Output
• Bus : Address & Data bus
• External / Peripheral Signal
• Reset signal
• Power Supply and Clock Frequency
• Interrupt
Advantages and Dis-advantages
• Advantages of micro-processor:
1. Computational and processing speed is high.
2. Both operation and maintenance are easier.
3. Less number of components, compact in size,
and less cost. It is also more reliable.
• Dis-advantages of micro-processor:
1. It has limitations on the size of data.
2. The speed of execution is slow and so real-time
applications are not
possible.
3. most micro-processors do not support floating-
point operation.
