FUNCTIONS

The document defines functions as relationships where one variable depends on another, outlining key concepts such as domain, range, dependent, and independent variables. It distinguishes between algebraic functions and transcendental functions, and discusses operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of functions, including the importance of their domains. Additionally, it introduces composite functions and provides practice exercises for better understanding.

When one variable quantity so depends upon another that the value of
the latter determines that of the former, the former is said to be a
function of the latter.
FUNCTION- is a set of ordered pairs (x,y) in which no two distinct
ordered pairs have the same first number.
The set of all admissible values of x is called the DOMAIN of the
function.
The set of all resulting values of y is called the RANGE of the function.
If y is a function of x, then y is called the DEPENDENT Variable,
while x is called the INDEPENDENT Variable.

ALGEBRAIC Func’n is a function whose relation to the

variable is expressed in algebraic equation. All other functions
are called TRANSCENDENTAL functions like logarithmic,
exponential, trigonometric or circular, and inverse trigonometric
functions.

Adding and Subtracting Functions

When we look at functions we also want to look at

their domains (valid x values). In this case, the
domain is all real numbers.
FUNCTIONS
Multiplying Functions

In this case, the domain is

all real numbers because
there are no values that will
make the function invalid.
FUNCTIONS
Dividing Functions

In this case, the domain is

all real numbers EXCEPT
-1, because x=-1 would give
a zero in the denominator.
FUNCTIONS
Composite Function – When you combine two or more functions
• The composition of function g
with function is written as

1. Evaluate the inner function f(x) first. 2

2. Then use your answer as the input of
the outer function g(x).
