all the programs (set of instructions) that

RECAP: APPLICATION SOFTWARE

 Application Software are programs

developed to carry out specific tasks or

 There are many different types of

application software where each is
designed for a particular type of
activity.
TYPES OF APPLICATION
SOFTWARE
• Application software can also be
categorized as follows:
 General-purpose software
 Integrated software
 Specialised software
 Customised software
 Custom- written software
GENERAL-PURPOSE
SOFTWARE
• General-purpose software, also known
as ‘off the shelf software’ are usually
well tested and relatively cheap.
• The software is not written for any specific
business or organisation but can be used or
adapted to suit their specific needs.
• In other words, general-purpose software
tries to be a ‘jack-of-all-trades’.
EXAMPLES
INTEGRATED SOFTWARE
 Integrated software is a set of
related programs combined in a unified
package that allows data to be
transferred easily between programs.

A basic integrated package may

contain word processor, spreadsheet,
database, communications and
graphics presentation programs.
EXAMPLES
SPECIALISED SOFTWARE
• Specialised software is software that
is written for a specific task rather
than for a broad application area.

• These programs provide facilities

specifically for the purpose for which
they were designed.

automate several steps in software such
as databases, spreadsheets and word
processors.
CUSTOM-WRITTEN

 This
is software written to meet the
needs of a company - that is unique and
may have unique needs.

 Based on a company’s specialised

requirements, custom written or tailor –
