Standard Normal Variable

The document discusses the standard normal variable, including how to convert between normal random variables and standard normal variables using z-scores. It provides examples and exercises related to calculating z-scores and finding areas under the normal curve. Additionally, it outlines steps for using a z-table to determine corresponding areas for given z-values.

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

STANDARD
NORMAL
VARIABLE
A STANDARD
NORMAL VARIABLE is
a normally
distributed random
variable with a mean
STANDARD NORMAL CURVE

STANDARD NORMAL VARIABLE and vice versa

A 50-item test was administered to a class. If

the mean of the students’ scores is 35 and
the standard deviation is 4;
• What raw score corresponds to 0 in a
standard normal distribution?
• What z-score corresponds to 43 in a
standard normal distribution?
CONVERTING A NORMAL RANDOM VARIABLE TO A
STANDARD NORMAL VARIABLE and vice versa

To convert a raw score into the standard

score or z-score, we use the formula:

where z is the z-score

x is any data value or raw score
is the mean
is the standard deviation

STANDARD NORMAL VARIABLE and vice versa

Example: Suppose IQ scores are normally

distributed with a mean of 100 and standard
deviation of 10. If your IQ is 85, what is your
z-score?
CONVERTING A NORMAL RANDOM VARIABLE TO A
STANDARD NORMAL VARIABLE and vice versa

To convert a z-score into a raw

score, we use the formula:
CONVERTING A NORMAL RANDOM VARIABLE TO A
STANDARD NORMAL VARIABLE and vice versa

Example: The heights of teachers in

LNHS are normally distributed with a
mean of 140 cm and standard deviation
of 15cm. Mr. Castro has a z-score of 1.2.
What is his actual height?
Try This!
Find the value of z if:

1. the raw score is 95, the mean is 99

and the standard deviation is 8
z = - 0.5
2. the raw score is 47 with a mean of 45
and standard deviation of 6
z = 0.33
Now, try this!
Suppose IQ scores in your class
are normally distributed with a
mean of 100 and standard
deviation of 10. If your IQ is 102,
what percentage of the class has
higher IQ than you?
In finding the area under the
normal curve:
• convert scores first into z-scores
• construct the normal curve
• refer to the z-table to find area
Individual Activity:
The students in a class took a 100-item test.
The mean is 85 and the standard deviation
is 4. What percentage of the students got a
score:
a. Higher than 90?
b. Lower than 75?
c. Between 78 and 85?
Individual Activity:
The students in a class took a 50-item test.
The mean of the scores is 35 and the
standard deviation is 4. What percentage of
the students got a score:
a. Higher than 42?
b. Lower than 30?
c. Between 32 and 44?
Based from the empirical rule, what is the approximate
area of the z-values from:
• -1 to 1?
• -2 to 1?
• -3 to 2?
How about the area from:
• 0 – 1.45?
• 2.51 to the right?
• Below -1.23?
STEPS ON HOW TO FIND THE
AREA THAT CORRESPONDS TO Z-
VALUE using a
1. Draw or sketch a normal curve and
Z-TABLE
locate the given z-value.
2. Shade the region according to the
condition of the z-value whether it
is above, below or between.
3. Use the z-table to find the
corresponding area.
STEPS ON HOW TO FIND THE
AREA THAT CORRESPONDS TO Z-
VALUE using a
4. Split the given z-value into
Z-TABLE
hundredths. Find the whole
number and tenths digit at the
left part of the table while the
hundredths at the uppermost
part of the table.
EXAMPLE:
Sketch the normal curve and
shade the region that
corresponds to the given. Find
its area.
1. from 0 to 1.33
2. from 0 to -2.01
3. to the right of 1.88
4. to the left of -2.41
5. from -1.12 to 2.46
DO THIS BY PAIR!
Identify the following area or
region that corresponds to each
z-values. Sketch the curve and
find its area.
1. from 0 to 1.56
2. from 0 to -2.34
3. to the right of 2.85
4. from -0.32 to 1.76
