ME 109

Engineering Drawing
This course is a part of engineering foundation. It is targeted to
help student visualize the basics of engineering design. Emphasis
would be on basic drawing concepts and the classical techniques
of manual drawing. It is intended for improving students
approach toward conceptual design.

LANGUAGE
Effectiveness of Graphics Language
1. To help communication

2. A picture is worth a thousand words

3. Universal language

You can easily understand that …

The word languages are inadequate for describing the size,

shape and features completely as well as concisely.
Composition of Graphic Language
Graphic language in “engineering applications” uses
lines to represent the surfaces, edges and contours
of objects.

The language is known as “drawing” or “drafting” .

There are three ways to express the ideas

1.Free-hand drawing
2.Engineering drawing
3.Computer aided drawing
Freehand drawing
The lines are sketched without using instruments other
than pencils and erasers.

Example
Engineering drawing
Instruments are used to draw straight lines, circles, and
curves concisely and accurately. Thus, the drawings are usually
made to scale using the powerful concept of projections.

Example
Computer drawing
- The drawings are usually made by commercial software such as AutoCAD, solid works etc.
- Part modelling
- Assembly

Examples
Simple CAD/CAE/CAM Product
Lifecycle
Design Analysis C Manufacturing
CAD CAE CAM

D
Simple CAD/CAE/CAM Product Lifecycle refers to
the process of designing, analyzing, and
manufacturing a product using computer-aided
design (CAD), computer-aided engineering (CAE),
and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)
software.
Importance of Engineering Drawing

Purpose: The main purpose is to visually communicate the specifications,

requirements, and functions of a product or structure to ensure that it can be
built, assembled, and maintained correctly.
It ensures that all engineers, machinists, and technicians involved in a project
have a clear understanding of the design intent.

Applications: Engineering drawings are used in various disciplines:

• Mechanical Engineering: For designing machines, engines, and mechanical systems.
• Civil Engineering: For structures like buildings, bridges, and roads.
• Electrical Engineering: For circuit diagrams, control systems, and electronic devices.
• Aerospace Engineering: For designing aircraft and spacecraft components.
Professional Standard in Engineering
Drawing

Engineering drawings can be produced to a good professional Standard if the following

points are observed:
• The types of lines used must be of uniform thickness and density.
• Eliminate fancy printing, shading and associated artistry.
• Include on the drawing only the information which is required to ensure accurate clear
communication.
• Use only standard symbols and where no other method of specification exist,
appropriate abbreviations.
• Ensure that the drawing is correctly dimensioned (adequately but not over-
dimensioned) with no unnecessary details.

Remember that care and consideration given to small details make a big contribution
towards perfection.
Elements of Engineering Drawing
Engineering drawing are made up of graphics language
and word language.

Drawing Standard
Introduction

Standards are set of rules that govern how technical

drawings are represented.

Drawing standards are used so that drawings convey

the same meaning to everyone who reads them.
Standard Code

USA ANSI American National Standard Institute

Japan JIS Japanese Industrial Standard
UK BS British Standard
Australia AS Australian Standard
Germany DIN Deutsches Institut für Normung

Drawing Scales
Length, size
Scale is the ratio of the linear dimension of an element
of an object shown in the drawing to the real linear
dimension of the same element of the object.

Size in drawing Actual size

:
Drawing Scales
Designation of a scale consists of the word “SCALE”
followed by the indication of its ratio, as follow

SCALE 1:1 for full size

SCALE X:1 for enlargement scales (X > 1)
SCALE 1:X for reduction scales (X > 1)

Dimension numbers shown in the drawing are correspond

to “true size” of the object and they are independent of
the scale used in creating that drawing.
