Sensors

The document describes various types of sensors, including temperature, light, pressure, ultrasonic, and strain gauges, highlighting their functions and applications. Sensors detect and measure physical properties, converting them into electrical signals for various uses in fields like medicine, automotive, and agriculture. SENSOR

a device which detects or measures a physical

property and records, indicates, or otherwise
responds to it.

Any physical quantity like pressure, force, strain,

light etc., can be identified and converted into a
desired electrical signal.
Temperature

It is used to measure the temperature in the

environment and thus helps in knowing the variation in
the temperature.

They are used in the medical, automotive, aerospace

and agricultural fields.

Examples are thermocouple, thermistor, and a resistance

temperature detector.
Light

It converts light energy into an electrical signal to see

the output.

They are otherwise called as photo sensors or

photoelectric devices.

Mobile phones, computers, tablets use light sensors.

Pressure

This device is used to measure the pressure of liquids

and gases.

The pressure is measured, and it generates a signal as

output.

Examples are pressure transducers and pressure

switches.
A transducer is a device that converts energy
from one form to another.
Ultrasonic

Distance between transmitting and receiving ultrasonic

signals are measured using this sensor.

They are used in measuring liquid levels, detecting wire

breaks, height control, robotic sensing and so on.

The types of ultrasonic sensors are Proximity and

Continuous Level.
What is a Strain Gauge?

A strain gauge is a sensor that translates force, pressure, tension,

weight, etc. into a change in electrical resistance that can
subsequently be measured.

The resistance of a strain gauge varies with applied force.

Stress and strain happen when outside forces are applied to a

stationary item.
Strain Gauge Working Principle

Strain gauge on the principle of electrical conductance and its

dependence on the conductor’s geometry.

Whenever a conductor is stretched within the limits of its

elasticity, it will not break, but it may be narrower and longer.

Similarly, when it is compressed, it gets shorter and broader,

and ultimately it changes resistance.
