Lesson 4 - Human Person in The Environment
Lesson 4 - Human Person in The Environment
HUMAN PERSON IN
THE
ENVIRONMENT
OBJECTIVES
• Notice things that are not in their proper
place and organize them in an aesthetic
way.
• Show that care for the environment
contributes to health, well-being and
sustainable development;
• Demonstrate the virtues of prudence and
frugality towards environment.
WARM UP
EXERCISE
What are the environment
challenges that human
beings have been facing over
the past century until the
present time?
HUMAN PERSON IN
THE ENVIRONMENT
Philosophy is not merely for self-
discovery and interpersonal
relationships but also for
environmental responsibility.
Humankind is a force affecting the
environment. Likewise, the changes
that are happening to it also affect
us.
HUMAN PERSON IN
THE ENVIRONMENT
The Relationship of Man with the
Environment
Environmental Philosophy or
Environmental Ethics, the moral
relationship and its non-human
content is being studied.
Philosophers believe that human
person has the ability to change
environment to suit his purposes.
HUMAN PERSON IN
THE ENVIRONMENT
The Relationship of Man with the
Environment
This means that as human
person, we interact not only
with our fellow human being,
but also with other living and
non-living elements in our
environment.
THREE VIEWS OF
PHILOSOPHICAL
ENVIRONMENT
ANTHROPOCENTRISM
Focuses on the significant role of
humankind in the world and considers
nature as the means by which humans
are able to meet their needs and
survive. This view believes that
humans are most important species
on the planet and they are free to
transform nature and use its
resources.
ANTHROPOCENTRISM
For example, anthropocentricism
would argue that there is no moral
wrong in cutting down trees, as we
can use them to keep ourselves warm.
Many of today's environmental crises,
including climate change, ultimately
stem from an anthropocentric view
that humans are entitled to natural
resources.
• Believes that humans are not only
significant species on the planet,
BIOCENTRISM and that all other organism have
inherent value and should be
protected. This view advocates
ethical treatment of animals.
• Ethical treatment - No
experiments on animals. No
breeding and killing animals for food
or clothes or medicine. No use of
animals for hard labour. No selective
breeding for any reason other than
the benefit of the animal.
ECOCENTRISM
This believes that humankind is a part of
a greater biological system or
community and that we have a
significant role as a stewards or
guardians of nature. This view promotes
the idea that order and balance in
nature brings about stability and
beauty.
ECOCENTRISM
For example, being ecocentric include not
littering, conserving energy and water,
preferring public transportation, preferring
environmentally friendly products, and
participating in environmental management
activities. Extraction of oil for fuel, mining
industry, deforestation for furniture industry
The relationship between human beings and
the environment can be categorized into
two major perceptions: (a) the
environment as an object of human being’s
existence (i-it relation), and (b) the
environment as a subject (i-thou relation)
I-IT RELATION
The environment is treated as merely
an object to be used or experienced
while human beings are considered as
the only active creation on earth. Thus,
human beings are detached from the
environment.
I-THOU RELATION
This relationship, human beings treat
the environment as a subject and not as
an object. When humans view
environment as a subject, it entails
respect and acceptance of the
possibilities and consciousness of the
environment as a THOU (YOU)
ENVIRONMENTAL AESTHETICS
5. It focuses on the
significant role og humns in
the world and considers
nature as the means to
survive.

AND RESPECT MY
ENVIRONEMNT)

ENVIRONMENT
Philosophy plays a very significant
role in human development and
environmental ethics. As it also raises
environmental consciousness to how
humans are kept responsible for
everything that affects them. Via
philosophy we will understand
various viewpoints on environmental
ENVIRONMENTALISM
Is one very positive activism. It helps
to address environmental problems as
an advocacy. It is an essential act of
care for nature.
For example, the practice of shoppers
bringing their own bags for purchases
in order to reduce waste and choosing
cleaning products based on whether
the ingredients would help or hurt the
environment.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Is the philosophy of fulfilling all
people’s present diverse needs
without undermining the capacity of
future generations to meet their own
needs as well.
For example, Solar panels are one of
the most easily-recognizable
examples of sustainable development.
They can be fitted to buildings of any
shape or size, and cost less to install

development that meets the needs of

the ability of future generations to
