goal
Setting the Research goal

 • Understand the what, why, and how of the project.

• SMART Goals Framework
• S- Specific
• M – Measurable
• A- Achievable
• R- Relevant
• T-Time - Bound
Specific

 Goal should be clear and easy to understand

 What to accomplish?
 learning new or exploring data or visualising data
 How to accomplish?
 What programming language, packages and
functions
 Who needs to involve with the project?
 Team
Measurable

 Identifies a metric with a specific target to show

that you have succeeded
 Choose metric that indicates topic has been learnt
successfully
 Need to decide at what point exploring to be stopped
 Choose a metric that indicates good model fit or
accuracy
Achievable

 Achievable based on current skills, knowledge and

resources
 Does the goal challenge me to improve and grow,
even if I fail
Relevant

 Check whether it aligns your own interests as well

as whether it will actually allow you to grow and
move forward
 Is it worth the time and effort?
 Is this the right time to tackle the goal?
Time-Bound

 Goal should have deadline.

 Creates a sense of urgency in achieving the goal
 Goal can be broken down into smaller objectives
and tasks to continue build momentum as you
progress through the project.
Understanding the Project
Context
 • Ask questions and explore examples.
 • Align research with business expectations.
 • Recognize how results impact the business.
Project Charter
Components
 • Clear research goals
 • Project mission and context
 • Analysis methodology
 • Resource requirements
 • Deliverables and success metrics
 • Timeline
Step 2: Retrieving Data

 • Data collection is foundational to success.

 • Internal sources: Databases, Data Marts, Data
Warehouses, Data Lakes.
 • External sources: Nielsen, GFK, Twitter, LinkedIn,
Facebook.
Data Collection
Challenges
 • Scattered knowledge due to organizational
changes.
 • Policies balance access and security.
 • Explore internal and external sources.
Data Quality Checks

 • Conduct checks during retrieval and

preparation.
 • Use statistical methods to ensure data integrity.
 • Focus on learning insights during exploration.
Different Stages of
information retrieval
process
 Problem/topic
 Information need occurs when more information is
required to solve
 Information retrieval plan
 Define information need, resources, retrieval
techniques and search terms
 Information retrieval
 Evaluating the results
 Locating publications
 Find out where and how the required publication can
be acquired
 Using and evaluating the information
 Evaluate the final results of the process
