Shear Force and Bending Moment
Diagrams for a Cantilever Beam
A cantilever beam is a beam that is fixed at one end and free at
the other. The analysis of shear force and bending moment in
such beams is crucial for understanding how they will respond
to loads.
Shear Force Diagram (SFD):
The shear force at any section of the beam is defined as the sum
of vertical forces acting on either side of that section.
For a cantilever beam with a point load (P) applied at the free
end, the shear force remains constant along the length of the
beam until it reaches the point of application of the load.
Cont..
• The shear force just to the left of the load is equal
to -P (negative because it acts downward), and it
remains constant until reaching the fixed support
where it equals -P.
• The SFD typically starts from zero at the fixed
support, drops vertically down to -P at the free end,
and remains horizontal between these two points
Bending Moment Diagram
(BMD)
• The bending moment at any section of a beam is
defined as the sum of moments about that section
due to external loads.
• For a cantilever beam with a point load at its free
end, the bending moment increases linearly from
zero at the free end to its maximum value at the
fixed support.
Cont...
• The maximum bending moment occurs at the fixed
support and can be calculated using
• M = P⋅L where L is the length of the beam.
The BMD starts from zero at the free end and rises
linearly to
• M = P⋅L at the fixed support
