Math 10 Lesson 4 (Sum of Arithmetic Sequence)

The document outlines a lesson plan for teaching the sum of Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences, including objectives and activities for students. It provides formulas for calculating the sums of these sequences and includes several examples and exercises for practice. The lesson aims to help students understand and apply these concepts in real-life scenarios.

TEACHER III
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson you are expected to:
• manifest understanding of sum of Arithmetic
Sequence and Geometric Sequence;
• compute for the Sum of Arithmetic Sequence and
Geometric Sequence; and
• apply the concept of Sum of Arithmetic Sequence
and Sum of Geometric sequence in real-life
examples.
Activity 1: Arithmetic or
Geometric?
Determine whether the following is Arithmetic or
Geometric Sequence. Write A for AS and G for GS.
1. 9, 109, 209, 309, ...
2. 2, 10, 50, 250, ...
3. −8, −4, 0, 4, ...
4. 28, 26, 24, 22, ...
5. −1, −5, −25, −125, ...
SUM OF ARITHMETIC
SEQUENCE
The sum of the n terms of an arithmetic sequence is:
𝒏
𝑺 𝒏= [ 𝟐 𝒂 𝟏+ (𝒏 −𝟏 ) 𝒅]
𝟐
where: n = number of term
a1= first term
d = common difference
Example 1:
Given the arithmetic sequence 3, 13, 23, 33, …, find
the sum of the first 13 terms.
Example 2:
Find the sum of the first 10 terms of the arithmetic
sequence 3, 9, 15, 21, …
Example 3:
Find the sum of the first 25 terms of an arithmetic
sequence 18, 23, 28, 33, …
Example 4:
Given the sequence 12, 10, 8, 6, …, find the sum of
the first 21 terms.
Example 5:
Find the sum of the first 30 terms of the arithmetic
sequence -5, -9, -13, -17, …
Example 6:
What is the sum of the first 30 multiples of 6?
SUM OF ARITHMETIC
SEQUENCE
If the common difference is not given, we use:

𝑺 𝒏=𝒏 [
𝒂𝟏 + 𝒂𝒏
𝟐 ]
where: n = number of term
a1= first term
an = last term
Example 7:
Find the sum of the first 20 terms of an arithmetic
sequence if a1 = 5 and a20 = 62.
Example 8:
What is the sum of the first 50 counting numbers?
Example 9:
The sum of the first 10 terms of an arithmetic
sequence is 530. What is the first term if the last
term is 80?
Activity 2: Solve Me!
1. David wants to buy a cellphone worth ₱12, 000.
If he plans to save ₱100 on the first week, ₱200
on the second week, ₱400 on the third and so
on, will he be able to buy a cellphone after 7
weeks?
2. The third term of an arithmetic sequence is -5
and the sixth term is 7. What is the sum of the
first 10 terms?
