Two types of variables:
Categorical or Qualitative Variables -These
variables are classified into attributes or categories,
such as gender, religion, political affiliations, academic
courses, blood type, civil status, and classroom
Numerical
advisory. or Quantitative Variables -These
variables are classified according to numerical
characteristics, such as temperature, height, weight,
average grade, quarterly examination scores, daily
allowance, and average internet consumption.
Example 1

replacement from an urn containing 5 orange balls and
6 violet balls. Let V be the random variable
representing the number of violet balls. Find the
values of the random variable V.
Solution: Steps Solution
1. List the sample space S = {OO, OV, VO, VV}

*Probability Distribution– of a discrete random

variable X is a list of each possible value of X and the
corresponding probabilities of the values.

Properties of a Probability Distribution
1.The probability of each value of the random
variable must be between or equal to 0 and
1. 0 ≤ P(X) ≤ 1
2.The sum of all probabilities should be 1. In
symbol P(X)=1 or ΣP(x) = 1.

1. Find P(x≥3) Answer:

2. Find P(x<2) 1. P(3) + P(4) = 0.35 + 0.05 = 0.40
3. Find P(1≤X≥3) 2. P(0) + P (1) = 0.06 + 0.23 = 0.29
4. Find P(2) 3. P(1) + P(2) + P(3) = 0.23 + 0.31 +
0.35 = 0.89
4. P(2) = 0.31
