Slack has introduced a 'Save for Later' feature to enhance productivity by allowing users to bookmark important messages and files, but only 12% of users are utilizing it. This low adoption rate leads to user frustration and inefficiency due to information overload and difficulty in finding critical conversations. Proposed strategies to increase usage include targeted in-app tutorials and leveraging social proof to demonstrate the feature's value and functionality.

Overview
We introduced “Save for Later” feature that’s designed to enhance productivity by allowing users
to bookmark important messages, files, or content for easy access later.

The feature allows users to view saved items will be organized into three separate tabs:
• In Progress
• Archived
• Completed

However, only 12% of users are utilizing this feature which is a significant challenge to user
experience and hinders the platform's potential to maximize user productivity.
Problem
The low adoption rate of the "Save for Later" feature is a concern for Slack's user experience and
productivity goals. This feature is designed to enhance productivity by allowing users to
bookmark important messages, files, or content for easy access later. Now if only 12% of users
are utilizing this feature, it suggests that a significant portion of the user base is not taking full
advantage of the platform's capabilities to streamline their workflow.

Impact on User Experience

• Frustration and Inefficiency: Users struggles to find important information within their channels.
• Information Overload: Channels can become cluttered, making it difficult to find and focus on critical
conversations.

Possible Reasons for the Low Discovery

• Lack of awareness: Users may not be aware of the existence of the "Save for Later" feature or its
potential benefits.
• Lack of perceived value: Users not understanding how it can benefit their specific workflows.
Persona
The two target user segments we would want to increase the usage %age of
“Save for Later” feature:
1. Product Managers 2.
Developers
• Refers back to specific file or message • Frequently share and receive code
for product updates, task assignments snippets, bug reports, technical docs
• Collaborating with multiple teams to • Answering to raised bug tickets with
launch product/features. different priority levels.

Challeng
es
• Lost context during product transitions • Rapid context switching
• Difficulty tracking multiple product updates • Information overload
• Communication gap • Collaborating across projects

How "Save for Later" addresses

their needs
• Centralized repository for product insights • Reduced context switching time

• Saving and prioritizing key updates • Focus only on useful information

• Staying informed • Enhanced collaboration

Proposed Strategy (1st)
Targeted In-App Tutorials and Prompts

How this addresses pain points

• Lack of Awareness
 In-app tutorials can guide users through the "Save for Later" feature, demonstrating its functionality and highlighting key use cases.

• Lack of Perceived Value

 Tutorials can showcase how the feature can solve specific user pain points (eg: quickly finding important information, improving
workflow efficiency, staying organized).

Implementation
 Develop interactive tutorials that guide users through the process of saving and retrieving content.
 Implement in-app prompts that suggest using “Save for Later” in relevant scenarios.
 Personalize prompts based on user behavior and role (e.g: show developers how to save code snippets, show product
managers how to save post launch feedback for later use)
Proposed Strategy (2nd)
Leverage Social Proof

How this addresses pain points

• Lack of Awareness
 By showcasing how other users are successfully using the feature, it can encourage others to try it.

• Lack of Perceived Value

 Seeing how others benefit from the feature can demonstrate its value and encourage adoption.

Implementation
 Highlight how other teams or individuals are effectively using "Save for Later" to improve their workflow (e.g., in blog
posts, case studies, or within the Slack app itself).
 Encourage users to share their "Saved Items" with their teams or in a dedicated Slack channel, showcasing the value and
creativity of the feature.
 Utilize channels, threads, and direct messages to promote successful use cases and encourage user engagement with the
"Save for Later" feature.
