The beginning of Girl
Scout of the Philippines

1940’s
It took one courageous woman, the suffragist
Josefa Llanes Escoda to form and lead the
Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP)
Movement after coming from the United
States of America to take up basic scouting
lessons in 1939.

Another woman leader, Pilar Hidalgo Lim,
then national president of the National
Federation of Women’s Clubs, joined
Escoda and led the way in further
developing the Movement

On May 26, 1940, the GSP was chartered


under Commonwealth Act No. 542 during
the administration of President Manuel L.
Quezon.

In 2001, Dr. Cristina Lim Yuson was elected member of the Asia
Pacific Committee and was subsequently elected Chairman in
2004.

Dr. Febe Marl Paat, a distinguished GSP volunteer, was elected


as a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl
Scouts (WAGGGS) Asia Pacific (AP) Committee for two terms
from 2007 to 2013.

Beginning in 2009, the GSP aligned its programs with the Global
Action Theme of the WAGGGS, an educational program focusing
on the Eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The GSP is vigilantly working with local and international women


organizations to ensure that girl-child and girl-youth issues are
raised and addressed.
The GSP recently launched the STOP THE VIOLENCE
AGAINST WOMEN AND CHILDREN CAMPAIGN and is
actively pursuing partnerships with public and private
entities toward the achievement of a safe
environment for girls worldwide. In 2012, Michelle
Alvarez, a young and active volunteer, was appointed
by WAGGGS as International Day of the Girl
Ambassador for the Asia Pacific Region.

Through the years, the GSP continues to pursue


vigorously its character building and youth
development programs and is actively contributing to
the economic thrust of the country as part of the
Movement’s commitment to nation-building.

Filipino girls and young women who are progressive,
dynamic, proactive, patriotic, and God-loving.

MISSION
To help girls and young women realize the ideals of
womanhood and prepare themselves for their
responsibilities in the home, the nation and the world
GOALcommunity.
Girls scout of the Philippines inculcate in the youth
patriotism and encourage their involvement in public and
civic affairs.

GSP Promise and Scout Law / Girl Scout

TRADITION
GirlScouts makes the Girl Scout Sign
when they say the Girl Scout Promise,
when they welcomed into Girl Scouting at
an investiture ceremony or when they
greet other Girl Guides. The three fingers
represent the three parts of the Promise

Scout Promise
On my honor , I will try:
To serve God and my country
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law
When you meet another Girl
Scout, you can greet her with the
Girl Scout Handshake. Shake
hands with your left hand and
make the Girl Scout sign with your
right. It’ s special way to remind
us that we’re all sisters because
we belong to Girl Scouts.
The friendship circle stands for an unbroken
chain of friendship with Girl Scouts and Girl
Guides around the world. Everyone stands in
a circle, crosses their right arms over their left
and clasps hands with her friends on both
sides. Everyone makes a silent wish as a
friendship squeeze is passed from hand to
hand.
