CULTURAL COMPETENCY
 The objectives:
 Definition of culture.
 Cultural competence.
 Culture is often described as the combination of a body of:
 knowledge,
 belief and
 behaviour.
 Culture is a framework through which a person views the world.
 It involves a number of elements such as:
 personal identification,
 language,
 religion,
 social groups.
CULTURAL COMPETENCE

 Defined as ability to understand, appreciate and interact with people


frome cultures or belief systems different from one’s own.

 E.g as a public health work it is demanded of you to have an


understanding of and honour, the histories, cultures,
languages ,traditions child rearing practices
 Value children’s different capacities and abilities

 Respect differences in familiies’home lives


FOUR FEATURES OF CULTURAL
COMPETENCE
 Awareness ( avoid unconscious bias or blind spots,stereotyping &
prejudice which can create barriers

 Attitude ( our values & beliefs can help us open to different views and
opinions, varying degree of exposure to oppression & discrimination
may make one to be indifferent to diversity

 Knowledge ( the more informed we are about different culture the


more considerate we become

 Skills(practice skills in cultural competence and avoid cross-cultural


discrimination
Importance of cultural competence

 Connections as you understand their unique backgrounds and


understand your own culture and ethnicity

 Willingness to learn about cultural practices and worldview of others


leads to deeper relationships whether at work or community level

 Willingness to accept and respect these differences


 These elements influence the health of the people and the delivery of
health services.
 The increasing diversity of the nation brings opportunities and
challenges for health care providers
 Understanding patients' diverse cultures is important for the following
reasons:
 eliminating health care disparities and
 providing high-quality patient care.
 Cultural competency is critical in the following ways:
 Reducing health disparities
 Improving access to high-quality health care,
 In providing health care that is respectful and responsive to the needs of
diverse patients.
 Cultural competence enables health care systems and professionals
to function effectively to understand the needs of people.
 Cultural competence is a set of behaviours and policies that enable a
health care system to function effectively in transcultural
interactions.
 In practice, cultural competence acknowledges and incorporates:
 the importance of culture,
 the assessment of cross-cultural relations,
 the expansion of cultural knowledge, and
 the adaptation of services to meet culturally unique needs.
 Cultural competence is essential in the following areas:
 Examination,
 Evaluation,
 Diagnosis, and
 Intervention.
 Cultural competence is important in the:
 development of rapport,
 collecting and synthesizing patient data
 developing the plan of care for the patient.
 Cultural competence is the ability to recognize and acknowledges
that cultures are neither inferior nor superior.
 A healthy mentor/mentee relationship includes:
 Respect,
 Empathy,
 Genuineness, and
 Warmth.
 The goal of culturally competent health care services is to provide the
highest quality of care to every patient regardless of one’s cultural
background
 Some common strategies for improving the patient-provider
interaction in the health care system include:
 Making cultural competency a core institutional value.
 Incorporation of cultural knowledge into policy making,
 Providing ongoing training and evaluation on cultural competency issues
 Collecting data on patients' race and ethnicity.
 Collecting data on patients' primary language.
 Ensuring the provision of professional translation services.
 Involving consumers and community leaders in the designing of health
programs.
 Collaborating with institutions in the provision of the healthcare services.
 Helping patients locate providers who speak their language.
 Increasing staff diversity.

 Embrace cultural humility ( accept you are not an expert and be willing to ask
question where you do not understand culture but you are willing to learn
and embrace opportunities to learn.

 Self-aware –is about self- assessment and self-critique, its recognizing


opportunities that we can remain open-minded with diverse groups.
 Remember that we looking through the lenses of our gender,race,economic
background,religion,sexual orientation
 All these colour our perception and appreciating this help us to be
EMPATHETIC as we interact with other cultural groups.
