WHAT IS KARGIL VIJAY DIWAS?
Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates the Kargil War
triumph of Indian troops against Pakistani forces in
taking control of the Tiger Hill on July 26, 1999.

Every year on July 26, it is observed to honour the


soldiers who participated in Operation Vijay and to
revive their courage and pride.
HISTORY OF KARGIL WAR
Codenamed Operation Vijay, The Kargil War was fought
between India and Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) in
the Kargil area of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian Army drove out Pakistani soldiers and regained


control of the renowned Tiger Hill and other significant posts
nearby during this war.

It was one of the largest military confrontations and cost


many lives and resources, and the final conflict to take place
between Pakistan and India.
CAUSES OF THE CONFLICT
Around 5,000 Pakistani soldiers invaded the Indian
territory, sparking the battle.

India was unprepared for the conflict since the infiltration


was viewed as a breach of the Shimla Agreement signed in
1972 to keep the two nations at peace.

The attacks posed a serious danger to India's security and


access to Ladakh by attempting to cut off the vital
roadway that connects Srinagar to Leh.
SIGNIFICANCE OF KARGIL DIWAS
Vijay Diwas acts as a reminder of the the military's
commitment of India's national security and sovereignty.

It serves as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of Indian


soldiers who gave their everything to keep the nation safe
from invaders.

It is a day that evokes a sense of pride and patriotism in every


Indian's heart.
HOW IS VIJAY DIWAS CELEBRATED?
The day is marked by wreath-laying ceremonies at war
memorials and the Dras War Memorial in Kargil.

Schools, colleges and other organisations across the country


organise various events and ceremonies to remember the
sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in the war.
