WEEK 2 VOLCANOES
MELC
MELC 15: Illustrate how energy from
volcanoes may be tapped for human use.
VOLCANOES
Objectives:
1. Explain the advantages and
disadvantages of volcanic
eruptions.
2. Illustrate how energy from
volcanoes may be tapped for
human use.
Whenever we hear volcanic eruptions, we probably
think about disaster, calamity or any other negative
thing that is related to it. Right?
We definitely perceive this as something that is very
frightening/terrifying.
Well, volcanic eruptions actually have both
disadvantages and advantages.
Its quite easier for sure to think about its negative
effects right? So lets start with the disadvantages
first.
alright, what do you think are its disadvantages?

ADVANTAGES AND
DISADVANTAGES OF
VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS
DISADVANTAGES
OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION
1. LAHAR - a violent
type of mudflow or debris
flow composed of a slurry
of pyroclastic material,
rocky debris and water.
The material flows down from a
volcano, typically along a river
valley.

DISADVANTAGES
OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION
2. NUEE ARDENTES -
are clouds of hot ash and
poisonous gases that are
ejected from a volcano;
results to glowing
avalanche.
These clouds travel at huge
speeds of up to 200km per
hour.
DISADVANTAGES
OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION
3. DAMAGE TO
PROPERTY
Lava from volcanoes
can also burn
everything in its path
DISADVANTAGES
OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION
4. EFFECTS ON THE
ENVIRONMENT
Clouds of ash, dust and gas
may reduce global
temperatures by several
degrees.
The emission of sulfur dioxide
into the atmosphere may lead
to acid rain.
Other toxic, poisonous gases
also adds to the natural
DISADVANTAGES
OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION
5. LOSS OF LIFE
ADVANTAGES
OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION
1. FERTILE SOIL
Volcanic soils are very fertile.
These rich soils are called
laterite soils and are rich in
minerals.
They are common in many
countries such as Brazil,
where coffee is grown, and
parts of Southern Italy, where
fruit and vegetables are
grown.
ADVANTAGES
OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION
2. TOURISM
Many dormant and active
volcanoes attract hundreds
of thousands of tourists each
year.
This leads to many spin-off
industries such as bus
companies, restaurants,
shops and hotels. This
generates a lot of
employment.
ADVANTAGES
OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION
3. CREATION OF
NEW LAND
Volcanoes can create
new land for human
habitation, for example,
Iceland.
ADVANTAGES
OF VOLCANIC ERUPTION
4. BUILDING
MATERIALS
Granite, which is used
in the construction
industry, is formed by
volcanic activity.

5. GEOTHERMAL
ENERGY
Heat from volcanoes
may be tapped for
human use.
02
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
The word geothermal comes from the
Greek words geo (earth) and therme
(heat).
Geothermal energy is
heat within the earth.
It is a renewable
energy source
because heat is
continuously produced
inside the earth.
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
People can capture geothermal
energy through:
1. Geothermal power plants,
which use heat from deep
inside the Earth to generate
steam to make electricity.
2. Geothermal heat pumps,
which tap into heat close to
the Earth's surface to heat
water or provide heat for
buildings.
GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT
At a geothermal power plant, wells are drilled 1 or
2 miles deep into the Earth to pump steam or hot
water to the surface.
GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT
These power plants are found in areas with a lot of
hot springs, geysers, or volcanic activity, where
the Earth is particularly hot just below the surface.
HOW IT WORKS:
1. Hot water is pumped from deep underground
through a well under high pressure.
HOW IT WORKS:
2. When the water reaches the surface, the
pressure is dropped, which causes the water to
turn into steam.
HOW IT WORKS:
3. The steam spins a turbine, which is connected
to a generator that produces electricity.
HOW IT WORKS:
4. The steam cools off in a cooling tower and
condenses back to water.
HOW IT WORKS:
5. The cooled water is pumped back into the
Earth to begin the process again.
GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMP
Geothermal heat pumps can do all sorts of things
—from heating and cooling homes to warming
swimming pools.
GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMP
These systems transfer heat by pumping water or
a refrigerant through pipes just below the Earth's
surface, where the temperature is a constant 50 to
60°F.
GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMP
During the winter, the water or refrigerant
absorbs warmth from the Earth, and the pump
brings this heat to the building above.
GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMP
In the summer, some heat pumps can run in
reverse and help cool buildings.
HOW IT WORKS:
1. Water or a refrigerant move through a loop of
pipes.
HOW IT WORKS:
2. When it is cold, the water heats up as it travels
through the part of the loop that is buried
underground.
HOW IT WORKS:
3. Once it gets back above ground, the warmed
water or refrigerant transfers heat into the
building.
HOW IT WORKS:
4. The water cools down after its heat is
transferred. It is pumped back underground
starting the process again.
HOW IT WORKS:
5. On a hot day, the system can run in reverse.
