Basic Computer Parts

Chase
BIOS
The BIOS (Basic Input Output System is a very small piece of code
contained on a chip on the motherboard. When you start your
computer, BIOS is the first software that runs. It identifies your
computer’s hardware, configures it, tests it, and connects it to the OS
(Operating System) then that will load up your computer.

Hard Drive
A physical device that stores digital data on your computer that a
normal computer user would have (programs, documents, pictures,
etc.)

Heat Sink
A heat sink is component in your computer connected on the
motherboard that dissipates heat to a cooler space and helps the
computer to operate at a safe temperature.

Network Port
A virtual connection point either on the computer or networking
device. (May be called an “ethernet” port or maybe a “LAN” port)

Motherboard
The motherboard is what the components are connected to and the
ports. (You’ll make sense of it being called that)

Multimeter
A physical tool used to measure multiple electrical properties like
voltages, currents, and resistance.

Power Supply
A power source that regulates power for internal components of a
desktop computer

Processor
A processor (Aka a Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the main
component of a computer that controls the device's operations.

Intel is one company that makes


processors and may be labelled on your
device (Usually located near touchpad on
laptops)

RAM
RAM (Random Access Memory) is short-term memory (Just temporary
storage)

RJ-45 (Registered Jack-45) is a type of connector (LAN/Ethernet Cable)
that connects your computer to a network (likely a router) which is just
called ethernet.

A SATA Cable connects a computer's host bus adapter to storage
devices like hard disk drives

Startup BIOS
BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System, and it's a small piece of
software that runs when a computer starts up.

Not everyone’s bios is the


same! To get to BIOS restart
your computer and keep
pressing the designate "BIOS
key" (usually F2, Del, or Esc)
on your keyboard as soon as
the manufacturer's logo
appears on the screen

Surge Protector
A surge protector is a device designed to protect electronic equipment
from damage caused by sudden, temporary increases in voltage. Like
power outages could cause surges.

USB stands for Universal Serial Bus, and it's a standard way to connect
devices to computers and other electronics (Mice, keyboards, etc.) Like
USB-A or USB C
