Teachers Notes

Good joke for this lesson:

Say ‘can anyone tell me the unit for power?’
A student says ‘Watt’
You say again but louder ‘I SAID CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE UNIT FOR POWER?’

Guaranteed laugh… (sometimes)

5.2 Power
LO: What does ‘Power’ mean in Physics and how do we calculate it?
DO NOW:
Keywords
1) List the three things a force can change about an object. Power
2) Define the ‘work done’ by a force. Watt
3) State the principle of moments Energy
Time
Joules per second
Challenge:
Consider a skydiver falling at terminal velocity. They pull their parachute.
Immediately after they pull their parachute is their acceleration:
a, equal to g b, less than g c, equal to zero d, less than zero
Critical
thinking
Super Challenge:

Work done it the change in energy caused by a force acting over a
distance. W = F x d

3) State the principle of moments

For an object in equilibrium, the sum of the clockwise moments about a
point is equal to the sum of the anticlockwise moments about that same
point.

• Understand the units for power.

Step to Success 3
• Explain how to calculate power from energy transferred and
time.
Step 1 - Define power in Physics.

Task 1 – Discuss

What does power mean in everyday language?

What might Power mean in Physics?

Can you think of the equation for Power?

Watt is the unit for Power.

Step 1 - Define power in Physics.

Task 1 – Discuss

What does power mean in everyday language?

She is very powerful
We need more Power!
PowerPoints are really useful
What might Power mean in Physics?
Power in Physics is the rate of energy transfer or the rate of change in energy.
Can you think of the equation for Power?
Power = change in energy / time P = ΔE/t
Watt is the unit for Power.
Watts (W) (Did you spot the joke?)
Step 1 - Define power in Physics.

Task 2 – Copy

Power is the rate of energy transfer

Power = Energy transferred / time P = ΔE/t

It is measured in Watts

Task 3 – Let’s consider the unit of Power more closely

What is a 1 Watt equal to?

(HINT: In terms of Joules and seconds)

If you increase the power of something, what two things are you actually changing?

Write down your ideas…

P = E/t = 500/10 = 50W

2) A light bulb has a power rating of 60 watts. It is used for 2 hours. How
much work is done by the light bulb during this time?
P = E/t, E = P x t = 60 x 2 x 60 x 60 = 432,000J = 432kJ

3) A car engine provides a power output of 2000 watts. The engine does
10,000 joules of work. How much time does it take to do this work?
P = E/t, t = E/P = 10,000/2000 = 5s

flat surface in 5 seconds. Calculate the power delivered by the person.
WD = F x d = 400 x 20 = 8,000J
P = E/t = 8,000/5 = 1600W

Super Challenge - A motor generates 800 watts of power and operates for 30
seconds. If it applies a force to move an object 12 meters, calculate the
