INTRODUCTION TO

DATA ANALYSIS
Data
Detective
“The Case of the Missing Item"
◦“An expensive painting has gone missing from
the museum’s gallery during the evening gala.
Your job is to use the data provided to analyze
and figure out who the thief is!”
•Based on all the data, who do you believe is the most likely
suspect?

•Which clues helped you make your decision?

•Was there any missing information that would have helped

you make a clearer conclusion?

•Do you think the presence of a weapon or the number of

witnesses makes a certain suspect more suspicious?
What is Data Analysis?
◦Data Analysis is the process of looking at information
(data) and finding patterns, trends, or useful insights.
It is like solving mystery by using clues (data) to
understand something better.
Why do we analyze?
◦To make better decisions
◦To understand patterns or trends
◦To solve problems using information
Example
◦If a teacher looks at the grades of students over a
year, they can analyze the data to see which students
need extra help or if certain teaching methods are
working.
Types of Data
◦Numerical Data: Data involves numbers,
like age, height, or temperature
Numerical Categorial
DataData: Data that Data
◦Categorical is divided
into categories like types of animals,
favorite colors, or types of fruits.
Numerical Data
•Discrete Data
•Continuous Data

Categorial Data
•Nominal Data
•Ordinal Data
Examples
◦Numerical Data: Ages of students in class (12, 13, 14)
◦Categorial Data: Favorite color of students (yellow,
orange, blue, pink, violet)
BASIC METHODS
OF DATA ANALYSIS
Basic methods of data analysis
◦1. Organizing Data: Sorting Data in a table or list to make it easier
to understand
◦2. Summarizing Data: Finding the average, highest, or lowest
values in a set of a data

Example: if you have a list if ages 5 students:

ages: 12,14,15, 16.

Highest Age: 16
Lowest Age: 12
Visualizing Data
◦Sometimes, it is easier to understand data if we draw charts or
graphs. For example, a bar chart shows how many students
prefer each subject.
INTRODUCTION TO
DATA MODELS
What is a Data Model?
◦A data model, is a way to organize data so that we
can understand it better and make predictions. It is
like creating a map that helps us find patterns in data.
Example:
◦If we have data on how many hours students' study and their
grades, we could create a model to predict the grade based on
how many hours a student studies.
Types of Data Models
◦Descriptive Models: these describe data , like finding
the averages or the most common values.

◦Predictive Models: the use data to make predictions

about the future. For example, predicting the price of a
product based on its sales history.

◦Classifying Models: these helps categorize data. (e.g.

sorting animals onto categories)
CREATING SIMPLE
DATA MODELS
Creating a Data Model
◦To create data model, we need to:
◦1. choose the data- collect the relevant data
◦2. organize the data- use tables or charts to arrange the
data.
◦3. analyze the data- look for patterns or relationships
between the data points.
◦4. create the model- based on the patterns, make a simple
model (like a line graph, a table or a prediction rule)
Explain the following:
•How do computer systems
collect data, and what are some
examples of tools or devices used
in this process?

•Explain how computer systems

store and process data to make it
useful for decision-making.
