The document provides an overview of Amplitude Modulation (AM) and Frequency Modulation (FM), detailing their definitions, origins, types, advantages, and disadvantages. AM varies the amplitude of a carrier signal while FM varies the frequency, with FM generally offering clearer sound and less interference. The document also highlights the similarities and differences between AM and FM broadcasting methods.

QUESTION

1EXPLAIN AM AND FM
DEFINITION OF TERMS.
Amplitude is the maximum displacement of particles from
their mean position.
Frequency is the number of complete cycles which the moving
particle complete in one second.
 Modulation is the process of varying one or more properties
of a carrier signal with another signal called modulation signal.
MEANING AND ORIGIN OF AM
AM stands for amplitude modulation.AM works by
varying the amplitude of the signal or carrier transmitted
according to the information being sent while the
frequency remains the same.
AM was the earliest modulation method used for
transmitting audio in radio broadcasting.
CON,T
It was developed by Roberto Landell de Moura and Reginald
Fessenden through a radiotelephone experiment in the 1900.
TYPES OF AM
There Are Three Main Types Of Amplitude Modulation

Double Sideband-Supressed Carrier Modulation(DSB-SC)

• The transmitted wave consists of only the upper and lower

sidebands.
• The channel Sideband requirement is the same.
TYPES OF AM CON,T

 Single Sideband Modulation(SSB)

• The modulation wave consist of only the upper sideband or the

lower sideband.
• It translates the spectrum of the modulating signal to a new
location in the frequency domain.
TYPES OF AM CON,T

Vestigial Sideband Modulation (VSB)

• One sideband is pushed almost completely and just a trace of

the other sideband is retained.
• The required channel bandwidth is slightly in excess of the
message bandwidth by an amount equal to the width of the
vestigial sideband.
ADVANTAGES OF AMPLITUDE MODULATION

Amplitude modulation is easier to implement

Demodulation can be using few components and a circuit.
DISADVANTAGES OF AM
 AM detectors are sensitive to noise.
 Reproduction is not high fidelity. Transmission bandwidth is
10000Hzand not 40000Hz, making it susceptible to
interference.
 Power consumption is higher as compared to FM.
MEANING AND ORIGIN OF FM
FM stands for frequency modulation.
 It is the encoding of sound by varying the frequency of the
wave while the amplitude is constant.
FM broadcasting was invented by an American engineer called
Edwin Armstrong in 1933.
TYPES OF FM
They Are Two Types Of FM

 Analog Frequency Modulation; In analog modulation, a

continuously varying sine carrier wave modulates the data
signal.
 Digital Frequency Modulation; With digital modulation, the
frequency of a carrier or a baseband signal is varied in discreet
sections according to binary data.
ADVANTAGES OF FM

FM produces clearer sounds as compared to AM, there is less

interference of noise.
Power consumption is less as compared to AM.
DISADVANTAGES OF FM

 Equipment cost is high due to its large bandwidth.

 It has more complicated receiver and transmitter
SIMILARITIES BETWEEN AM AND FM.
They are both ways of broadcasting radio signal.
Both transmit information in the form of electromagnetic
waves.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AM AND FM
AM FM
M has poorer sound quality compared FM is less prone to interference than A
ith FM However, FM signals are impacted by
physical barriers.
M is cheaper and can be transmitted FM involves higher cost and cannot be
ver long distances transmitted over longer distance
ransmitter and receiver are simple. Transmitted and receiver are more
complex.
M has high power consumption. FM has low power consumption.
In AM a radio wave known as the In FM, a radio wave known as the " carier " or "
carrier" or "carrier wave" is modulated in carrier wave " is modulated in frequency by the
