Final Project Presentation

The report details a training session on resin types, injection moulding processes, and the manufacturing of shrink wrap film. It covers the properties and percentages of various resins, the blowing process, testing methods for shrink wrap film, and comparisons between one-stage and two-stage preform production. Key parameters such as temperatures, pressures, and mechanical properties are highlighted throughout the document.

INJECTION MOULDING: HUSKY MACHINES

Injection pressure: 120 Bar Barrel + Screw

Transfer Pressure: 110 Bar

Injection/Shooting
Hot runner Temperature: 290 to 300 degree C

Cycle time: Hydraulic Valve (Cut – off)

1. Total Machine time

1.1 Dry Cycle time (3 Sec) Mould

1.2 Cooling time (2.6 sec) (Hot runner, Cavity, Core, EOAT)
1.3 Injection time (2.83 sec)

Raw Material Used in Shrink Wrap Film Manufacturing

Mettallocene: 1. Mechanical Strength

RM: Poly-olefin family- (Family of thermoplastics that
2. Hot tack
includes polyethylene and polypropylene)
3. Seal Strength
4. Low Sealing Initiation
PP, PE (LDPE,HDPE, LLDPE)
Temperature: (100/110 degree C below)
LDPE: 1. Good Shrinkage
2. Low energy to melt
3. Processability-easy

HDPE: 1. Good Stiffness

2. High Density
3. Tensile properties (increased)
4. Mechanical properties (Increased)
How percentage of resins impact the shrinkage properties in
Shrink Wrap Film?

% of material: LDPE, HDPE, LLDPE

Ideal Shrinkage Temperature: 200 degree C

1. The shrinkage temperature can be controlled by controlling the amount of LDPE.

2. Shrinkage temperature reduces as we increase LDPE content hence shrinkage increases.

HDPE and Mechanical Strength

3. HDPE and mechanical strength are directly proportional to each other.

4. As HDPE increases the mechanical strength also increases.

Tunnel Length
1. If the tunnel length increases hence the shrinkage temperature decreases.

Thickness of the Shrink Wrap Film

1. 60 micron to 90 micron
2. Thickness depends on lower speed machine and manual handling.
Blowing process: Shrink Wrap Film

4 Hoppers are present in the system, consisting of resin combination

Through the load cell the resin flows to the barrell

Barrell consist of 3 different layers

This combination travels through the spiral die

(temp being 210 degree C)

Two systems are present for cooling, OBC and IBC

Nip Roller (Still, Rubber) (From tube to flat film)

Blowing process: Shrink Wrap Film

Camera is measuring the thickness of the film

Thickness is monitored by OBC and as thickness

increases the heater switches ON

Web guide is present which keeps the film in the center

Still roller pulls the film while rubber roller presses

the film

Winder performs the function of slitting the film

TESTING: SHRINK WRAP FILM

1) Dart Impact Tester (Mechanical testing)

2) Shrinkage Tester (Hexaplast)

50 cm X 50 cm (20 sec)
70% shrinkage in machine direction = Good Shrinkage
7% in Cross Direction= Low Shrinkage

3) Thickness Gauge Meter (Hanatek)

Records Min, Max, Mean Values.

4) Digital Opacity Tester

5) Heat Sealer (Laminates)

Shrinkage, Thickness, Mechanical Properties(Dart, Tensile, Elonagtion) all of these measured in Universal Testing

Miscellaneous Information

Types of Preforms: Preforms in Beverage Industry: Juice, Water, CSD

1. Warm Fill Juice: 68 to 72 degree celsius, filling temp, Hot-fill Resin Grade.
2. Hot Fill Preforms: 80 to 85 degree celsius, 1881 TN
3. Water preforms
4. CSD Preforms

1 Stage Vs 2 Stage
• 1 stage is better compared to 2 stage
• 2 stage does not have any blowing capacity on the same plant
• In one stage there is control over preform production
• 1 stage has long cycle time
• In two stage the preforms might be susceptible to scratches during storage, alignment and transfer.
