RANDOM

SAMPLING
illustrate random sampling (M11/12SP-IIId-2)
POPULATION

 It refers to the whole group under study

or investigation
 It does not always refer to people. It may
mean a group containing elements of
anything you want to study, such as
objects, events, organizations, countries,
species, organisms, etc.
SAMPLE

 It is a subset taken from a population,

either by random sampling or by non-
random sampling.
 It is a representation of the population
where it is hoped that valid conclusions
will be drawn from the population
ILLUSTRATION
RANDOM SAMPLING

 It is a selection of n elements
derived from the N population, which is
the subject of an investigation or
experiment, where each point of the
sample has an equal chance of being
selected using the appropriate sampling
technique.
RANDOM SAMPLING

1. Probability Sampling
 The sampling technique that
involve random selection.
TYPES OF RANDOM
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

Simple Random Sampling

 A sampling technique in which each member
of the population has an equal chance of
being selected
TYPES OF RANDOM
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

Systematic Random Sampling

 A sampling technique in which members of
the population are listed and samples are
selected at intervals called sample intervals.
TYPES OF RANDOM
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

Stratified Random Sampling

 A sampling procedure in which members of the
population are grouped on the basis of their
homogeneity.
 The sample is constructed by classifying the population
into subpopulations or strata on the basis of certain
characteristics of the population, such as age, gender or
socio-economic status
TYPES OF RANDOM
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

Cluster Sampling
 It is sometimes referred to as area sampling
and applied on a geographical basis.
 Generally, first sampling is performed at
higher levels before going down to lower
levels.
TYPES OF RANDOM
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

Multi-stage Random Sampling

 It uses a combination of different sampling
techniques.
RANDOM SAMPLING

2. Non-Probability Sampling
 The sampling technique that do not
involve random selection of data.
TYPES OF RANDOM
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

Convenience Sampling
 The researcher gathers data from nearby
sources of information exerting minimal effort.
 It is used by persons giving questionnaires on
the streets to ask the passers-by.
TYPES OF RANDOM
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

Snowball Sampling
 Referred as chain-referral sampling.
 The samples have traits that are rare to find.
 It is a sampling technique in which existing
subjects provide referrals to recruit samples
required for a research study.
TYPES OF RANDOM
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

Quota Sampling
 Sample units are picked for convenience but
certain quotas are given to interviewers.
 The design is specially used in market
research.
TYPES OF RANDOM
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

Volunteer Sampling
 Sample units are volunteers in studies
wherein the measuring process is painful or
troublesome to a respondent.

SAMPLING
DISTRIBUTION OF
SAMPLE MEAN
SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF
SAMPLE MEAN

 A frequency distribution using the

means computed from all possible
random samples of a specific size taken
from a population size.
 The means of the samples are < or >
the mean of the population.
Steps in Constructing the
Sampling Distribution of the
Means
 Determine the number of sets of all possible random
samples that can be drawn from the given population by
using the formula , where N is the population size and r
is the sample size.
 List all the possible samples and compute the mean of
each mean.
 Construct the sampling distribution
 Construct a histogram of the sampling distribution of the
means
Example:

A population consists of the numbers 2,

4, 9, 10, and 5. Let us list all possible
sample size of 3 from this population
and compute the mean of each sample.
Example:

Construct a sampling distribution of

sample mean for the set of grades
below.
86 88 90 95 98
Consider a sample size of 3 that can be
drawn from the population.
Example:

Construct a sampling distribution of

sample mean for the set of scores
below.
30, 34, 36, 39
Consider a sample size of 2 that can be
drawn from the population.
Example:

Construct a sampling distribution of

sample mean for the set of data below.
12, 24, 31, 5
Consider a sample size of 3 that can be
drawn from the population.
