WHAT IS
BASKETBALL ?
 A team sports
played by two
teams of five
players on
rectangular court.
 The objective is to
shoot a ball through
a hoop 18 inches
(46 cm) in diameter
and mounted at a
height of 10 feet
(3.048m)
tobackboard at
each end of the
court.
Inventor...
 James Naismith
(November 6,1861 -
November 28, 1939)
was a Canadian-
American physical
educator, physician,
chaplain, sports
coach and innovator.
 He was born 1861 in
Ramsay township,
near Almonte,
Ontario, Canada.
Inventor...

 The first basketball

coach of of the
Kansas Jayhawks,
one of the most
successful
programs in the
game’s history.
 He invented Basketball in
1891 in Springfield,
Massachusetts as a
less injury-prone sport
than football.
Dr. Naismith was a college professor who wanted to create a
game that his physical education classes could play inside
during the long winters.
The first games used peach baskets nailed to the wall
forrims. The first ball used was a soccer ball.
In 1893, he replaced the peach basket with iron hoops and a
hammock-style basket.
The first recorded organized game was on January 20, 1892
played in the YMCA Gymnasium with nine players an the
game ended at 1-0.
Back then...
There were only thirteen rules of "basket ball":

1.The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both

hands.
2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both
hands.
3.A player cannot run with the ball, the player must throw it
from the spot on which he catches it, allowance to be made
for a man who catches the ball when running at good
speed.
4.The ball must be held in or between the hands, the arms or
body must not be used for holding it.
Back then...
5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping or striking in any
way the person of an opponent shall be allowed. The first
infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul,
the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made, or
if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole
of the game, no substitute.

6. A foul is striking the ball with the fist, violation of rules 3

and 4, and such as described in rule 5.
7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls it shall count a goal
for opponents.
8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from
grounds into the basket and stays there. If the ball rests on the
edge and the opponent moves the basket it shall count as a goal.
9. When the ball goes out of bounds it shall be thrown into the field
and played by the person first touching it. In case of a dispute,
the umpire shall throw it straight into the field. The "thrower-in" is
allowed five seconds. If he holds it longer it shall go to the
opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire
shall call a foul on them.
10.The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls,
and notify the referee when three consecutive fouls have been
made.
11.The referee shall be the judge of the ball and shall
decide when the ball is in play, in-bounds, and to
which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall
decide when a goal has been made and keep account
of the goals with any other duties that are usually
performed by a referee.
12.The time shall be fifteen-minute halves, with five-
minute rests between.
13.The side making the most goals in that time shall be
declared the winner. In the case of a draw, the game
may, by agreement of the captains, be continued until
another goal is made.

-The first ball made

specifically for
basketball were
brown, and it was
only in the late
1950s that Tony
Hinkle, then modified
to orange ball.
The Basket...
• The first basket that were
used were two peach baskets
that were hung from the
balcony of the gym.
• By 1906, the peach baskets
were replaced by metal
baskets with holes in the
bottom.
• In 1913, a hoop with a net
was invented so the
basketball could fall freely to
the ground.
The
Backboard...
• In 1893, due to the
overzealous
spectators interfering
with the basketball,
the backboard was
invented. The first
backboard was
constructed out of
wire mesh, and then
wood and now it is
made out of glass so
the backboard does
not interfere with the
viewing of the game.
c

Players
Allowed...

• In 1897, the number of players allowed on the

court was reduced to five on each team. A
team consisted of a center, two forward and
two guards. At the beginning, there were
allowing six, seven and even eight players on
each team.

c

• Basketball became popular because of the

Harlem Globetrotters.
• Abe Saperstein created the Harlem
Globetrotters in 1927.
• They were an all-Negro team, which toured the
world to promote basketball. There was no city
too big or too small for the them to play at.
c

How the NBA was

formed...
• In 1946, the Basketball Association of America
was formed but it did not go well because it
was competing against the National Basketball
League. But in 1949, the Basketball
Association of America and the National
Basketball League joined together. They
changed their name to the National Basketball
Association (NBA).
c

• In the 1930’s, Kenny Sailor invented the jump

shot. He realized that he could shoot over
taller players if he jumped while he was
shooting.
• Also in the 1940’s, Bob Kurland use to block
shots, which led to the rule of “goaltending”.
c

Aspects of the Game that

changed...

• In 1952 the foul lane was widened and the

three-second rule was put into affect so
centers could not station themselves in front
of the basket all the time.
• In 1954, the twenty-four second shot clock
was introduced to eliminating the “stalling
technique” used by teams so that they could
keep the lead in the game.
• The three-point line was introduced in 1967.
c
Great Players to Ever Play the
Game...

• Michael Jordan
• Julius Erving aka Dr. J
• Larry Bird
• Earvin “Magic” Johnson
• Kobe Bryant
• Lebron James and many more
