Objectives

• List types of data collection method

• Identify the u s e s different data collection
methods
• list thier merit and demirit
Methods of data collections
>There are different methods for data collection; the
commonest are
1. Observation
2. Interview and self- administered questionnaires
>The personal face to face interview

> The telephone interview

> Postal/ mail method interview

3. Focus group discussions

4. Reviewing Documentary source
1. Observation

 use of our sensory systems to record

behavior
 systematically selecting, watching
behaviors of people
 It is perceptional judgement
 It used in Qualitative and
behavioral research
Advantage
> It gives relatively more accurate data on behaviour
and activities
> Observation is always direct while other methods
could be indirect

Disadvantage
>The Investigators introduce their own biases
> It needs more resources and humanskill in using high
level machine
2. Interview and self- administered
questionnaires

• Interview is verbal questioning, as a

research tool or as a method of data
collection
•The personal face to face interviewing
•Postal/ mail method interview
•The telephone interview
>The personal face to face interview

• This is the one in which the

interviewer interviews a
respondents

• It can be structured or pre-

arranged Interview
Cont....

Advantage •>Disadvantage
• The response is more encouraging
as most people are willing to • The chance of personal bias
supply information when is high
approached personally
• It is very costly to collect
• The information obtained by this large number of
method is likely to be more accurate
• During the procedure, Supplementary • information, and need
information also can be collected
highly trained
• The language of communication can
be adjusted to the status level of the interviewer
respondents
• More time is required
>The telephone interview
>Advantage

 It is less expensive than direct personal method

>Disadvantage
 It is not used for every individual (lack of telephone)

 In this method, it is very difficult to ask many questions

 The respondents may give vague answers to the

questions

 Error of communication maybe occur

Self administered questionnaire

>Advantage
Simpler and cheaper

Can be administered to many persons simultaneously

for e.g to aclass of students
Unlike interviews, can be sent by post/mail

>Disadvantage
In complete questions maybe there
Not used for illiterate subjects
> Postal or mail method

•>Advantage •>Disadvantage
• The response rate tend to
• Questionnaires can be below
sent to many persons • Not used for illiterate subjects
simultaneously • Difficult to design a
• Relatively cheap questionnaire that all the
• Good for certain sensitive informants can understand it
questions (personal equally
information, families issues...)
3. Focus Group Discussion(FGD)

> Semi-structured group interviews with

6- 12 members in each group in
which a trained moderator guides the
discussion along pre-defined lines

> We use FGD when

> For information on preference, attitudes
and motivation

>When precise measurement is not required

> When group interaction will enhance the

research
4. Documentary source

> These aresources, which include

Clinical and other personal records

Reports of laboratory utilization (including

laboratory test results)

Death certificates, published mortality statistics,

census publications example Official publication of Central
Statistical Agency (CSA)

Publication of MOH
Cont . . .

International publications like WHO, UNICEF, MOH

Newspaper and journals

Record of hospital or any health institution

Mortality reports Morbidity report, Epidemic reports

Problems in gathering data
Language barriers
 Time constraints
 Suspicion by the respondents
 Cost
 Inadequate trained and experienced staff
 Cultural norms
 In general Data collection method should be based on
Accuracy of the information they yield

- The available resource the need for personal skill,

equpement,etc

- The nature and scope of the study subjects

- The acceptability of the procedure to the subject

- The probability that the method will provide a good

coverage (the answer should be attempted by majority)
