 Architecture is the art and science of designing and constructing


various buildings, structures, and complexes necessary for human life
and diverse activities.

 As defined by Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius, architecture is a


building or object that is structurally sound, functional, and beautiful

 Architecture comes into being as space begins to be captured,


enclosed, molded, and organized by the elements of mass. (DK Ching)

AR110 – INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN


 Design fundamentals involving basic creative design
exercises with emphasis on space, form and mass
AR111 - ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING
 The study of visual communication, typography,
alphabet of lines and their applications and the use
and care of instruments, geometric construction, use
of scale, mensuration and dimensioning. Emphasis is given
to the study of the theory of projection with analysis of
the relationship between points, lines and planes in
space. Includes exercises on surface development and
graphic presentation.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LEARN?

AR112 – MONOCHROMATIC FREEHAND DRAWING


 The study of visualization and graphic presentation in
the form of freehand drawings including still-life and
architectural forms and entourage using different
media, in black and white/monochrome.
AR113 - DESIGN THEORIES IN ORGANIZING FORM & SPACE
 Design theories with emphasis on perceptual and
proxemic sensitivities in organizing forms and space.

 GROUP WORK: (bring A3 paper next week)


What makes a GOOD DESIGN of a HOUSE?
Present by group your work (sketch, Illustrating, Write-up)
- PLAN (arrangement of space) site is optional
- SHAPE or FORM (form) one storey/floor only
- CONCEPT (idea)how did you come up with your design???
*basic sketch or illustration, simple explanation based on your
present knowledge only, you may GOOGLE your solutions but know
how to explain your process… HOW and WHY?
EXERCISE #2

 GROUP WORK:
*This exercise is an assessment of the student’s present
level of skill and knowledge on the DESIGN PROCESS.
*This Exercise will also introduce the students in the PROCESS of
an Architectural Design, making them aware of the complexity of
the subject and the required skills/knowledge needed to master
“DESIGN 1” *to create realistic awareness for the students. (still
will either inspire them or quit early) :D

 1. Research on the ELEMENTS or COMPONENTS,


PRINCIPLES, PROCESS, STANDARDS,HISTORY and
CULTURE of Architectural Design (DK Ching)

2. Research on Famous Architects (local or international,


living or deceased) and the Houses they designed.

HOMEWORK #2

 * The GOAL of HW#1 is to give students a


background on the subject, create a design library
and instill the right mindset in our students which is
establishing the eagerness to learn. Also creating a
deeper “purpose” early in their careers.
 HW#2 will introduce the Design Process and the
requirements of a good architectural design. It will
help them have role models thru their “Architect
Idols” and reference styles in Design.
DESIGN PROCESS

 Architectural design is an important phase of


every project because it focuses heavily on
the functionality and aestheticism of
your project. Every design detail will make a
difference in the day-to-day life of those who
will be utilizing the space.
