and instill the right mindset in our students which is
establishing the eagerness to learn. Also creating a
deeper “purpose” early in their careers.

requirements of a good architectural design. It will
help them have role models thru their “Architect

DESIGN PROCESS

 Architectural design is an important phase of

every project because it focuses heavily on
the functionality and aestheticism of
your project. Every design detail will make a

LECTURE 3
BY ARCH RATA
WHAT IS A CONCEPT

LATIN – conceptum
Meaning “something conceive”

 created by the human mind (until AI came)

 Manifestation of an original idea

*Reference book page found in Google Drive

CONCEPT in ARCHITECTURE

“Misused”
 Concept
Architects – dreams of grand and
underdeveloped ideas not realized
 Conceptual Architecture – not built, intended
only to stir up reaction
 Concept Stage – a sketch of a project
SPECIFIC vs UNIVERSAL

SPECIFIC – unique condition, use of building,

needs of user, site opportunities, topography,
political, social.
UNIVERSAL – standards, timeless solutions,
rules, measurements, scale and proportion,
beauty of character. The truth and integrity of
the project.
BUILT REALITY

“Architects should not only conceptualize but

also build their ideas and design”

Building is a physical manifestation of the

original concept.

We must always have a reason to BUILD.

Specific and Universal
Concepts are always
part of the Design
Solution
OTHERWISE, IT IS JUST A HOUSE OR A BUILDING

presenting next meeting – Sep. 11

*This Exercise will also develop the students visualization
techniques (communication thru sketching) their initial ideas on
space, form and architectural design.
