GLOSSARY OF TERMS
•The following is a glossary of relevant terms for you to study:
•Kinship -A group of people with common ancestry.
•Nuclear family-a mother, a father and their children live together.

•Extended family- extended family members such as grandparents, aunts, uncles and
cousins live with the nuclear family. Multiple generations share a common household.

•Sibling household: older children look after younger siblings, parents are absent.

•Single-parent family: children live with one parent following divorce or separation.

•Blended/Reconstituted family- a family consisting of a couple, the children they have


had together, and their children from previous relationships.

•Matriarchal -are families that are dominated by the female parent.


• Patriarchal -are those with a father as the central authority figure.
• Monogamy- marriage of one man to one woman.
• Polyandry- the custom of one woman having two or more husbands.
• Polygyny- the custom of one man having two or more wives.
• Patrilocal- husband and wife take up residence with the husband’s
parents
• Matrilocal- husband and wife take up residence with the wife’s
parents.
• Neolocal- the couple reside together by themselves.
• Matrilineal- follow the female line
• Patrilineal- follow the male line
•Bilineal- follow both lines

•Bigamy- the offence of marrying someone while already married to another person.

•Incest- sexual relations between people classed as being too closely related to marry each other,

•Marriage- the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship ,

•Legal separation- is a court-ordered agreement in which a married couple lives separate lives, usually by living
apart. The separation court order may specify financial obligations.

•Divorce- also known as dissolution of marriage, is the process of terminating a marriage or marital union.

•Annulment- is a legal procedure within secular and religious legal systems for declaring a marriage null and
void

•Alimony- financial support that a person is ordered by a court to give to their spouse during separation or
following divorce; maintenance.

• Inheritance- is the practice of passing on private property, titles, debts, rights, and obligations upon the death
of an individual.
