Unit 2
2.1 Addition
Objective

s
We are going to
 Add 3 digit number and a single digit
number, regrouping the ones
 Estimate and add a 3 digit number and a 2
digit number, regrouping the ones
 Estimate and add two digit numbers,
regrouping the ones
Key words:
Exchange: replacing one thing with another of the same value; for example, 10
ones for 1 ten

Decompose: split a number into hundreds, tens and ones.

Compose: put together hundreds, tens and ones to make a 3-digit number.

Regroup: put hundreds, tens and ones together in different ways, to support

0
calculating.

Single: one of something. A single-digit number has only one digit.

 Different ways to solve
addition up to 3-digit
numbers:
1/ Add mentally: to put number
in your head and count on.

2/Regrouping by using place

value of hundreds, tens and
ones.

most powerful creation of the human
spirit.
3- estimate:

130+ 50=180;
learners’ own
choice
of method,

134 +53= 187.

4 -estimate: 220+ 70=290;
learners’ own choice
of method, 215 +67= 282.

5- estimate: 150+ 140=290; learners’

own choice
of method, 148 +136= 284

6- estimate: 440+ 330=770;

learners’ own choice
of method, 439 +326=
765
9.1 Addition:
regrouping tens
and reordering
1/ Add mentally: to put number in your head and count on:

Examples: 54+32= 86

Remember: we start with the ones first we put the

greatest digit in our head which is 4 and less digit
which is 3 in hands and count on; and the same
with tens and the answer is….

452+250= 702
2/Regrouping by using place value of hundreds,
tens and ones: We start with ones place:
1 1
tens place:
225 hundreds place:
+
379 OR
_______ 2 hundreds+2 tens+ 5
604 ones+ 3 hundreds+7
tens+9 ones = 604
OR
1 1 5 hundreds+3 tens+ 6 ones+ 3
hundreds+9 tens+8 ones = 934

5 3 6

3 9 8 ones place:
________ tens place:
934 hundreds place:

Which expression could be used to find
the value of 871+140?

A. 8 ones+1 one+7 ones+4 ones+1 one

b.8 hundreds+1 hundred+7 tens+4 ones+1 one
c. 8 hundreds+1 hundred+7 tens+4 tens+1 one
*Practice-Fill in the blanks:
51+83 is the same as 50 +84= 134
Here 83 was changed by adding one digit
to become 84, we changed 51 by taking
one digit to become 50.

Remember!
If we add one digit to a number we have to
take the same digit from the other number
in order to keep the same value.
