TRANSCODE

INFORMATION FROM
LINEAR AND NON-LINEAR
TEXTS AND VICE VERSA
• Texts are categorized as either
linear or non-linear. Let’s
discuss the similarities and
differences between the two.
Linear Text
• Linear text refers to traditional
texts which are those texts that
use words in order to form
sentences and paragraphs. This
type of text needs to be read from
the beginning up to the end to get
and understand the message of the
Some examples of liner
text
• 1. newspapers
• 2. novels
• 3. stories
Non-Linear Text
• Non-Linear text is the opposite of
linear text. As its name suggests,
this type of uses words combined
with symbols and graphs to convey
and give information. In this type
of text, the reader does not have to
go through the text sequentially in
order to make sense of the text.
Examples of non-linear text
TIMELINE
Presents relevant information
and to be understood by the
readers in chronological order.
This helps the readers
understand the order of certain
events and how a particular
event leads to another

Flowchart

Shows the sequence of events from

start to finish to document a process.
Examples of non-linear text
Graph

Illustrates the relationship between

two or more variables using points,
bars, lines, or differentiated parts of a
whole.
Example of Graph
• Line graph –uses lines to present a trend or
change observed over a period of time.
• Pie graph- uses a circle which is divided into
slices to show how a whole is divided into
different.
• Table- summarizes and organizes information
(maybe in words or number) using rows and
column.
• Diagram- illustrations of an object or aa scene in
which specific, individual parts are labeled.
Example of Graph
• Organizational Chart- represents an
organization’s structure, highlighting the
different jobs, departments, and
responsibilities.
• Venn diagram- highlights the similarities
and differences of two objects being
compared.
• Aside from reading these types of text,
sometimes, you will also be asked to
transcode the information from one to
another. When you transcode, you convert a
linear text to its non-linear text
representation ( EG. Paragraph to a pie
chart) or a non-linear text to its linear text
form (e.g. Tale into a paragraph). Take note
that when this is done, the original
message of the texts is not changed or
revised, only the structure and format.
Text are transcoded to their opposite type because of
many reason. These are some of the following reasons:

When a text (e.g. a paragraph/essay) is too long, transcoding helps to make it shorter
making reading faster.

When a text (e.g. a paragraph/essay) holds a lot of information that is difficult to

understand, process, and remember, transcoding makes information easier to
understand and remember since information is converted into a simplified and more
visual format.

Important information that needs to be given more focus and attention can be easily
highlighted when presented in a form of a graph, chart, or table compared to when
presented I a paragraph or essay.
What to do when transcoding
linear to non linear text?
1. Identify which information needs to be present in the
new format you are going to do.
2.Select which non-linear text representation( table, charts,
graphs, diagram, etc.) is the best to use to present the
information.
3.Do the transcoding of information. Make sure tat you will
not add or delete any information that will change the
original message f the text you are transcoding.
c
4. Make sure to include a title, tables, labels, and legends
whenever necessary.
a. Title- This should directly tell what the reader will
see in your table, chart, graphs, diagram.
b. Label- These are words, signs or symbols that
provide and add clarity to the information presented.
These also help in explaining the
relationship between the ideas and
information presented.
What to do when transcoding
linear to non linear text?

c. Legend- These are words written on or next to a picture, shape, color,

or map that explain what does it mean.
REMEMBER!!
1. Identify which information needs to b presented in the new format
you are going to do.
2. Start your paragraph with a topic sentence that states the main
idea of the table, chats, graphs, or Instagram you are transcoding.
3. Discuss the ideas or information which are important or the
information you want your readers to pay attention to.
4. Make sure that you will not add or delete any information that will
change the original message of the text you are transcoding.
