Curve Existing Track Structure

 Rails : 52 Kg rails
 Sleepers : 52 kg curved sleepers
 Sleeper density : 1540 nos/Km
 Track type : Fish plated free rails
 Degree : 6 degree (290 m radius)
 Length : 553/710 – 554/060 (350 m)
 Between Station : MEKM-MNM
 Existing PSR : 45 Kmph
 Transition length : 60 m
 Super elevation : 80 mm
Problem faced during Maintenance:
 Severe Wear on outer rail
 Battering of joints
 Hogging of joints
 Top table flattening
 Maintaining gauge within limits
 Maintaining Check rail clearance within limits
 Rough running on joints
 Breaking of Check rails
Preventive maintenance carried
out :
 Interchanging of rails.
 Reduced the frequency of gauge face greasing – weekly.
 Attention to Battered joints.
 Elimination of Hogged joints.
 Carried out Gap survey and maintenance of standard gaps.
 Monitoring Gauge at curve weekly and attention to Tight/slack
gauges.
 Gas cut holes at checkrails replaced with Machine drilled holes.
 Provided sufficient ballast and maintained in standard profile.
Decision:

As the curve required frequent

attention and more man power,
Planning for updating the track
structure on curve initiated by
Manual methods as the stretch is
small and proposals were submitted
with proper justifications.
Proposed curve :

 Rails : 60 Kg R 260 Rails

 Sleepers : 60 kg wide based Slack gauge sleepers
 Sleeper density : 1660 nos/Km
 Track type : LWR track
 Degree : 6 degree
 Transition length : 90 m
 Super elevation : 100 mm
 SEJs : Planned to install two Combination SEJs at both
ends.
 Proposed PSR : 55 Kmph
Sequence of operations:

 (1) Material allocation

 (2) Trucking out of material
 (3) Through Sleeper Renewal work (TSR)
 (4) Through Rail Renewal work (TRR)
 (5) Check rail fabrication
 (6) SEJ Installation
 (7) Curve Realignment
 (8) PSR Elimination
(1) Materials Allocations :
 Sleepers:
Wide based curved sleepers manufactured and allotted from TMQ
Depot and transported to site.
 Rails :
60 Kg R 260 Rails (20 rail panels – 260m ) were unloaded from
Railway wagon at site with great cautions.
 Track fittings:
BI requested and lifted from Zonal depots and transported to site.
 Check Rails :
Planned to be fabricated at Site itself with Class ll 52 kg rails
available at Section itself.
(2) Trucking out of materials:

 In order to improve the output of the block time the materials

available at site needs to be trucked out at the place where renewal
to be done .
 750 nos of PSC Sleepers were trucked out and placed opposite to the
existing PScs for boosting the progress of TSR work.
 Rails were unloaded at the curve location itself from Railway Wagons.
 Track fittings were trucked out as per requirement.
Manual trucking out of sleepers:
(3)Through sleeper Renewal (TSR)

 Carried out with 20 nos of labours as 5 batches (4 per each batch)

 Progress of 140 sleepers per day.
 All Four types of Sleepers were laid accordingly to the Standard
diagram.
 Completed on 5 days.
 Followed by Kutcha packing on the same day.
 First and second packing on the frequency of 2 days.
 TSR of 20 Kmph long duration caution was availed in lieu of TSR work.
RDSO Specification :T-8979 to 8982
(4)Through Rail Renewal (TRR)

 TRR work was carried out in a phase on 260m (1panel) per day.
 22 labours were arranged for work execution.
 Closure location was provided with Combination fishplate with zero
gap.
 A watchmen was posted to ensure the intactness of the joints round
the clock.
(5) Checkrail fabrication

 Check rail fabrication was started simultaneously with a team of 5

labours.
 Progress of 26 m of check rails were fabricated per day.
 As the machine cutting and drilling requires more time and accuracy.
(6)SEJ Installation

 As per the correction slip no:17 dt 01.03.2024 LWR can be laid on

curves upto 6.5 degrees at Zone I & ll.
 Ours Zone ll with gradient of 1 in 960 . Hence, curve is planned to be
laid as LWR track itself by providing combination SEJ on either ends.
ACS no.17 dt 01.03.2024 :
(7) Curve realignment :
 Transition length increased to 90 m on both sides.
 SE increased to 100 mm to increase the speed upto 60 Kmph
 Existing measurements taken and solution calculated by Simple
curve software on IRICEN website.
 Slews were given by keeping the obligatory points in mind without
causing any infringement.
(8) PSR Relaxation :

 SE increased to 100 mm
 Station to station versine variation within prescribed limit.
 Sufficient transition length provided to maintain R(Ca) & R(Cd) within
50mm/m
 SE distributed to maintain cant gradient not steeper that 1 in 720 m
 Speed calculation sheet worked out to verify the above criteria and
proposals for relaxing the PSR of 45 kmph to 60 kmph submitted to
HQ.
Creep measurement at every half Km in addition to centre of
LWR and SEJ reference. (BZA/SCR)
OHE Masts are used as reference pillars wherever they are
available opposite to each other (even when a bit skew). If not,
one rail peg is erected on other side opposite to OHE mast.

CP – indicates Creep post. Arrow indicates which side of

the mast cord to be held.
Platform wall is used as a reference line with a thin
line on a distinct background paint.
