Superposition
theorem
It states that in any linear
network containing two or more
sources, the response in any
element is equal to the
algebraic sum of the responses
caused by individual sources
acting alone, while other
sources are kept at zero.
Steps to apply in Superposition
theorem
1Select a single source acting alone , short the voltage sources and open the
current sources if internal resistances are not known. If known, replace them
with their resistances.
2 Find the current through the voltage across the required element, due to
source under consideration , using a suitable network simplification method.
NOTE – If there are dependent voltage or current sources the circuit then the
dependant sources must not be replaced by open and short circuit, but
must be kept as it is while applying the theorem.
Limitations of super position theorem
• Objective 1
It is not applicable to circuits consisting of non-linear elements.
• Objective 2
It is not applicable to the circuits consisting of only dependable
sources.
• Objective 3
It is not useful to the circuits consisting of less than two independent
sources.
• Objective 4
It is not useful for power calculations. Since power is a non – linear
function.
Conclusion
.
Superposition theorem is a useful
method for analyzing linear electrical
circuits with multiple sources. It breaks
down complex circuits into simpler
parts to solve for currents and
voltages. This helps them understand
the circuit's behavior and troubleshoot
electronic systems.
