Flow

In Csikszentmihalyi’s words, flow is “a

state in which people are so involved in
an activity that nothing else seems to
matter; the experience is so enjoyable
that people will continue to do it even at
great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it”
(1990).
Characteristics of Flow

 Activity is enjoyable
 Enjoyment(Internal sources and sustainable
challenging and lead to growth) Vs Pleasure
(external sources and temporary)
 Nothing else matters
 Time gets distorted
 You lose sense of yourself
 People experience feelings of personal control over
the situation and the outcome. People have feelings
of serenity and a loss of self-consciousness. There is
immediate feedback. People know that the task is
doable and there is a balance between skill level

Three Preconditions important for
Savouring
 Sense of immediacy of what is happening here and now

 Social and self-esteem needs must be set aside ( relaxation and

disengagement from all worries and tensions)
 It requires an attentive but a quiet and relaxed state of mind

 It requires mindful focus on the pleasurable features of a current

experience fully appreciating one particular thing
 It could be object ,activity or internal thoughts ,feeling or memories
, anticipation
How to achieve Savouring ?

1. When
you’re experiencing a positive
moment/emotion/experience, magnify the
moment
2. Dropinto mindfulness for where you are and
how you’re feeling and savour those feelings
3. Shareit with someone close to you, friends,
family, significant other
4. Sit with the feelings for as long as you like
Savouring

 Break from analytical thinking

 Allowing self to get lost in that experience
 Self- awareness doesn’t affect the experience (rather it’s self-aware
activity)
 Thinking is focused on enhancing the experience
 Thinking about it and identifying the emotions associates with
Savouring can heighten its positive effect
Ask yourself…..

What emotions am I feeling ?

In Brief

 The evidence reviewed in this chapter strongly

suggests that increasing our experience of positive
aside. whether through savoring, flow, socializing
with friends, or other enjoyable activities, pays
dividends in the form of enhanced well-being.
Consistent with Fredrickson's broaden-and build-
theory, positive emotions enhance our physical ,
psychological, and social coping resources.
However, positive emotions are also "good" for us
disengagement whether or not we are in distress.
Positive emotions worries, and contribute to a happy
