MARITIME ECONOMICS

Topics : 1. Ships and their cargoes: Types of ships Liners Tramps Specialized vessels 2. The economics of bulk shipping 3. The economics of liner shipping 4. Passenger shipping

How best to identify types of ship? Probably .we can look at the Demand side and then the Supply side DD = cargo SS = the types of ships suitable to carry the cargoes

TYPES OF CARGOES
CARGOES

Specialized

General cargo

BULK

Motor Vehicle Forest Product

containerized

Loose ( breakbulk)

Liquid

Dry Bulk

Refrigerated Food
Minor Bulk Other than the major bulk cargo, example: Phospate / bauxite / silica sand/scrap iron etc.

Crude Petroleum

Major Bulk 1. Iron ore 2. Coal 3. Grain

Clean Petroleum Product (CPP) eg: Diesel/ jet fuel / kerosene etc Chemical Eg: sulphuric acid/methanol etc

Types of Cargo Ships Based on the types of cargoes (the demand side), the types of ships (the supply side) suitable ships to carry these cargoes are: 1. Ship for the Dry Bulk trades the ship is called bulk carrier ( or bulker) For the major bulk cargoes ( iron ore / coal / grain): Larger-sized bulkers: Capesize 100,000 200,000 dwt Panamx 60,000 99,000 dwt For minor bulk cargoes: Handysize : 10,000 39,000 dwt Handymax : 40,000 59,000 dwt

2. Ships for Liquid Bulk cargoes Crude oil the ship is called Oil Tankers. The various sizes of Oil Tankers: Small Tankers: 5,000 9000 dwt Handysize: 10,000 60,000 dwt Panamax : 60,000 79,000 dwt Aframax : 80,000 120,000 dwt Suezmax : 120,000 200,000 dwt VLCC : over 200,000 dwt
