Which is which?

Cry of Balintawak
or
Cry of
Pugadlawin?
WHERE???

Actually…

Bahay Toro,
Pugad Lawin, or
Biyak na Bato
SHORT
BACKSTORY:
It started when…
1. Jose Rizal was exiled to Dapitan.
2. Bonifacio realized that the propaganda movement of Rizal will
no longer work.
3. Bonifacio created a secret organization in 1892 named Kataas-
taasang, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng
Bayan or KKK.
4. Unfortunately, it was discovered in 1896 due to some issues.
5. Spaniards started to imprison some people who they thought
were KKK members.
6. Bonifacio was alarmed and started to call a meeting. He
wanted to start the revolution as soon as possible.
7. Some members disagreed because they thought it was still
early. But, Bonifacio still insisted.
So…

But the problem
is:
UNFORTUNA
TELY,

• The later accounts of Pio

Valenzuela and Guillermo
Masangkay on the tearing of
cedulas on 23rd of August are
basically in agreement, but conflict
with each other on the location.
• VALENZUELA – points to the house
of Juan Ramos in Pugad Lawin
• MASANGKAY – refers to Apolonio
Samson’s in Kangkong.
• Masangkay’s final statement has
more weight as it corroborative by
many witnesses who were
photographed in 1917, when the
earliest 23rd August marker was
installed.

(Guerrero, Encarnacion, & Villegas, 2003) Why Balintawak?

1. The term “Pugad Lawin” was never officially recognized as a name

of place on any Philippine map before WWII.
2. “Pugad Lawin” appeared in historiography only from 1928, or some
32 years after the event took place.
3. The revolution was always traditionally held to have occurred in
the area of Balintawak, which was distinct from Kalookan and
Diliman.

Therefore, while the toponym Pugad Lawin is more romantic, but it is

more accurate to stick to the original “CRY OF BALINTAWAK”

1896 Contribution and relevance of the document in the understanding

the grand narrative of Phil. History

Knowing the sacrifices of the hero’s and their contribution on how we

become independent and we get our freedom for our country.
Knowing there is one way to give respect to them. The movement of
Katipunan is a huge success for the Filipino’s because it is the symbol
of the unity of the people of the Philippines. If they don’t write these
documents or statements, today's generation won't know how the
Filipino’s get their freedom this is the reason why the Katipunan has a
huge. The grand narrative of the Philippines is not only about how the
Spaniards taken but also about the other countries. The grand
narrative of the Philippines is about the history of the Filipinos who
fight for our freedom and made a better future for the future
generation.
