Objectives:
•Identify the two types of
variables when having an
experiment.
•Differentiate each type of
variables.
•Appreciate and know the
importance of these two
variables when having an
1. b l e a v a r i
Variable
- is anything that can
change or be changed. In
other words, it is any factor
that can be manipulated,
controlled for, or measured
in an experiment.
2. n d e n t i n p e d e
Independent variable
– the variable that
is being manipulated
or controlled.
3. p e d t n e d e n
Dependent variable
•Hypothesis
– an educated guess.

Scientific Method
– a step-by-step
procedure to help you
solve problems and
answer questions.
A hypothesis states a
presumed relationship
between two variables in
a way that can be tested
with empirical data. It
may take the form of a
cause-effect statement, or
an "if x,...then y"
statement.
The cause is called the
independent variable;
and the effect is called
the dependent
variable.
1. What is the
independent variable?
IV - type of cream
lathered on the arms
and back.
2. What is the
dependent variable?
DV - Increase in
muscles size.
Group 1
Identify the independent
variable and dependent
variable in the hypothesis
“the tomatoes grow fastest
under fluorescent,
incandescent or natural
light.”
Group 2
a. Interpreting data
b. Drawing conclusion
c. Making a hypothesis
d. Making observations
an experiment to
determine how the
amount of salt in a body
of water affects the
number of plants that
can live in the water.
Which is the independent
variable?
a. Water
b. Temperature of a water
c. Amount of salt in the water
d. Number of plants in the water
last step in
scientific
method?
a. Writing report
b.Collecting data
c.Analyzing data
d.Drawing conclusion
4. Why is the scientific
method important to
follow?
a. It is more work, but it is worth it.
b. It helps the experiment take
longer and be better.
c. It ensures that results can be
trusted and repeated.
d. It ensures that people doing the
experiment are scientific.
5. What is the
information
gathered during
experiments?
a. Data
b. Conclusion
c. Theory
d. Hypothesis
