2 32
3.) Evaluate:
log 5 125
Properties of Logarithms
• The properties of logarithms can be derived
from the properties of exponents.
• We use these properties to solve equations.
Properties of Logarithms

Suppose m and n are positive numbers, b is a

positive number other than 1, and p is any real
number. Then the following properties hold.
Property Definition Example

Product
log b mn log b m  log b n log 3 9 x log 3 9  log 3 x

Quotient m 4
log b log b m  log b n log 1 log 1 4  log 1 5
n 4 5 4 4

Power log b m p  p log b m x

log 2 8 x log 2 8

Equality If log b m log b n, , then log8 (3x  4) log8 (5 x  2)

m = n. so, 3x – 4 = 5x+2
Example:
Solve each equation.
1.) log8 (4 x  6) log8 (8 x  2)
Example:
Solve each equation.
2.) log 9 x  log 9 ( x  2) log 9 3
Example:
Solve each equation.

Try:
Solve each equation.
4.) log 4 (2 x  11) log 4 (5 x  4)
Try:
Solve each equation.
5.) log11 x  log11 ( x  1) log11 6
