different things that bind us together. Let

Oxford dictionary defines participation as
“ to have a share in”

Community Participation
A process by which a community mobilizes
its resources, initiates and takes
responsibility for its own development of
activities and share in decision making for
and implementation of all other
development of programs for the overall
improvement of its health status.
Types of Participation
Community Verbalization;
Giving weight age to their say in planning
process and the service delivery models.

Community Mobilization
Community mobilization is the process of
engaging communities to identify
community priorities, resources, needs
and solutions in such a way as to promote
representative participation, good
governance, accountability and peaceful
change.
Purposes of Community
Mobilization
Increases community, individual and group
capacity to identify and satisfy needs and,
promote community interest.
Promotes good leadership and democratic decision
making.
Identify the available resources and increases
additional resources to the community.
Build on social networks to support the community.
It stimulates families to make intelligent and free
choices of demanding and using health services.
Raises immunization coverage for the target
groups.
Reduces vaccine preventable diseases.
Enable community to better govern themselves.
Benefits of Community Mobilization
Helps local ownership and the sustainability of
the health programs.
Helps to motivates people in a community
and encourages participation and involvement
of everyone.
Helps build, community capacity to identify
and address community needs.
Promotes, sustainability and long-term
commitment to a community change
movement.
It motivate a community to advocate for
policy changes and respond better to health
needs
Stages in Community Mobilization:
1. Starting – identifying and involving
different stakeholders and getting
organized
2. Assessing– learning more about the
community and the problems,
identifying possible solutions
3. Planning – prioritizing problems and
deciding how to solve them

activities to address TB
5. Monitoring and evaluating – considering the
results and impact, and using monitoring
information to adjust plans
6. Scaling up together – learning how to do
more activities or expand existing ones

In order to be effective, community mobilizers
need to combine a range of knowledge,
attitudes, and skills:
Attitudes include:
willingness to examine and challenge their
own assumptions, opinions and beliefs
genuine respect for all community members
non-judgmental and accepting approach
understanding that different people have
different views and perspectives
belief in community capacity to take effective
action

Role of Community Health
Nurse
The community nurse plays a vital role
regarding improvement of the health of the
community.
To identify health priorities in community.
To identify resources.
To facilitate a partnership between the
health care workers and the community.
Role of Community Health
Nurse
As mobilizer: works directly with existing leaders
and community groups to stimulate action.
As organizer: forms new organizations or bring
existing organizations together in new ways around
an issue.
As advisor: provides assistance to communities
Partner: may focus on capacity building of local
organizations or complement local organizations in a
joint effort.
As Liaison: links communities with resources, builds
networks.
As advocate: supports community members efforts
to obtain resources or change policies
