Interconnections of two port networks
• Two port networks may be interconnected in
various configurations, such as
– Series
– Parallel
– Cascade
– Series-parallel
– Parallel-series
Series Connection
Series Connection
• The above figure shows a series connection of
two-port networks Na and Nb with open
circuit Z-parameters Za and Zb respectively
• For network Na
• For Network Nb
• Then their series connection requires that
– I1 = I1a = I1b
– I2 = I2a = I2b
Series Connection
Series Connection
• In the matrix form it can written as
– [Z] = [Za] +[Zb]
• The result may be generalised for any number
of two-port networks connected in series
• The overall Z-parameter matrix for series
connected two-port networks is the sum of Z-
parameter matrices of each individual two
port network connected in series.
Parallel Connection
Parallel Connection
• For network Na
• For network Nb
Parallel Connection
Parallel Connection
Parallel Connection
• In the matrix form it can written as
– [Y] = [Ya] +[Yb]
• The result may be generalised for any number
of two-port networks connected in Parallel
• The overall Y-parameter matrix for Parallel
connected two-port networks is the sum of Y-
parameter matrices of each individual two
port network connected in Parallel .
Cascade Connection
Cascade Connection
• The simplest possible interconnection of two-
port networks is cascade or tandem-
connection. Two two-port networks are said
to be connected in cascade if the output port
of the first becomes the input port of the
second as shown above.
Cascade Connection
• For network Na we have
• Where
Cascade Connection
• In the equation form they can be written as
• For network N
• Now
• So, in the matrix form the h-parameters of the
series-parallel connected network can be
written as
• where
Series-Parallel connection
• In the matrix form it can written as
– [h] = [ha] +[hb]
• The result may be generalised for any number of
two-port networks connected in Series-Parallel
• The overall h-parameter matrix for Series-Parallel
connected two-port networks is the sum of h-
parameter matrices of each individual two port
network connected in Series-Parallel.
Parallel-Series Connection
Parallel-Series Connection
• The above figure shows a parallel-series
connection of two two-port networks Na and
Nb with g-parameters ga and gb respectively.
In this case input ports are connected in
parallel while the output ports are connected
in series.
• Then the connections require that
Parallel-Series Connection
• Now we have
Parallel-Series Connection
• In the matrix form it can written as
– [g] = [ga] +[gb]
• The result may be generalised for any number of
two-port networks connected in Parallel-series
• The overall g-parameter matrix for Parallel –
series connected two-port networks is the sum of
g-parameter matrices of each individual two port
network connected in Parallel -series.
