Standard Scores

(Z-Scores)
AVERAGE GRADE
The average grade of STEM 5 in Statistic and Probability is
87 and the standard deviation is 3. Draw a normal curve
showing the average grade of the STEM 5.
1. What is corresponding z-score if the grade is 93?
2. What is corresponding z-score if the grade is 78?
3. What is corresponding z-score if the grade is 80?
4. What is the grade of the student if the z-score is -1?
5. What is the grade of the student if the z-score is 1.25?
The z-score (standard score)
● The z-score is a measure of how many standard deviations
below or above the population mean a raw score is.
● These scores represent distances from the center (mean)
measured in standard deviation units.

Importance of z-scores

We can compare raw scores

from different scales by
converting them to z-scores (that
is, standardizing the values).
Additionally, we can only use the
normal table using the z-scores.
Converting raw score (x) to z-score

(for population data)

(for sample data)

where: z = z-score
x = raw score / measurement (age, weight, grade, etc.)
= population mean
= population standard deviation
x̅ = sample mean
s = sample standard deviation
Example 1: Convert the given raw score (x)
to z-score.
1.

Thus, a raw score of 58 corresponds to a z-score

of 2.
A positive z-score means that the raw score is
above the value of the mean.
Example 1: Convert the given raw score (x) to z-
2. x̄ score.

Thus, a raw score of 20 corresponds to a z-score

of -3.
A negative z-score means that the raw score is
below the value of the mean.
Example 1: Convert the given raw score
(x) to z-score.
3.

Thus, a raw score of 50 corresponds to a z-

score of 1.

Example 2: Convert the given z-score to raw score
(x)
1.

Thus, a z-score of 2 corresponds to a raw

score of 24.
Example 2: Convert the given z-score to raw score
(x)
2.

Thus, a z-score of 0.20 corresponds to a raw

score of 40.4 .
Example 2: Convert the given z-score to raw score

3. x̄

Thus, a z-score of -1.50 corresponds to a raw

score of 77.50 .

Determining
Probabilities Using
The
Standard Normal
Curve
The areas under the normal curve
corresponds to probabilities
Example:

The area between z = 0 and z = 1 is 0.3413.

This means that the probability of a z-score having a
value between 0 and 1 is 0.3413 or 34.13%.
1. Area ABOVE a z-score
This represents the probability of a z-score greater than a specific value.

P(z > - = 0.5 + 0.3413 P(z > 1) = 0.5 – 0.3413

1) = 0.8413 or 84.13 % = 0.1587 or 15.87%
Find the probability:
1. To the right of z = 2.54 2. At least z= -1.31
2. Area BELOW a z-score
This represents the probability of a z-score less than than a specific value.

P(z < -1) = 0.5 - 0.3413 P(z < 1) = 0.5 + 0.3413

= 0.1587 = 0.8413
Find the probability:
1. To the left of z = 1.25 2. At most z= -0.58
3. Area between two z-scores
This represents the probability of a
z-score between two specific values.

P(-1 < z < 1) P(1 < z < 2) P(-3 < z < -2)
= 0.3413 + = 0.4772 - 0.3413 = 0.4987 - 0.4772
0.3413 = 0.1359 = 0.0215
= 0.6826
Find the probability:
1. Between z = 1.25 2. Middle z= -0.50 and 3. Middle z= 1.12 and
and z= -2.35 z = - 1.23 z = 2.62
ASSIGNMENT:
Find the probability of z. Draw the normal curve and write the probability notation .

1. Above z = 0.84
2. Between z = -1 and z =2
3. Less than z= -2.15
4. More than z = -1.73
5. Below z = - 0.33
6. Between z =0.55 and 2.5
