Definition
• A Transaction Processing system (TPS) is a type
of information system that collects, stores,
modifies and retrieves the data transactions of an
enterprise

• Transaction an event that determines either a


manual or computer-based activity

• They are usually operated directly by front line


staff which provide the key data required to
support the management of operation

Types of TPS

There are two types of TPS

Batch processing
Real time processing

Batch Transaction processing

Batch processing is where the information is


collected as a batch and then processed later
on

Batch processing systems can save money


and labor over time, but they may be costly to
design and implement up front

Eg ; paying by Cheque, payroll

Real time Transaction processing

In a real time processing system


transaction are processed immediately
as they occur without any delay to
accumulate transactions. Real-time
processing is also referred to as online
transaction processing or OLTP
