Computers for Individual Users

Most computer are meant to be used by only one person at a time. such computer are
often shared by several people , but only user can work with the machine at any given
moment.
The six primary type of computer in this category are
1. Desktop Computer
2. Workstations
3. Notebook Computer
4. Tablet Computer
5. Hand Held Computer
6. Smart Phones
4

Desktop and Workstation computer

Desktop Computer
A desktop computer is a personal computer designed for regular use at a single
location on or near a desk or table due to its size and power requirements.

Workstation Computer
A workstation is a special computer designed for technical or scientific applications.
Intended primarily to be used by one person at a time, they are commonly connected
to a local area network and run multi-user operating systems.
A workstation (WS) is a computer dedicated to a user or group of users engaged in
business orprofessional work. It includes one or more high resolution displays and a
faster processor than a personal computer (PC)
5

Notebook Computer

A notebook computer is a personal computer

designed to be easily portable and capable of
being run on batteries and electrical current,
if needed.
An example of a notebook is a Mac Air. A
small, lightweight laptop computer.
6

Handheld Computer

A handheld computer is a computer

that can conveniently be stored in a
pocket (of sufficient size) and used
while you're holding it. Today's
handheld computers, which are also
called personal digital assistants
(PDAs), can be divided into those that
accept handwriting as input and those
with small keyboards.
7

Smart Phones

A smartphone is a cellular telephone with

an integrated computer and other features
not originally associated with telephones
such as an applications operating system,
web browsing, and the
ability to run software
8

Computer for organization

Some computers handle the needs of many users at the same time. These powerful
systems are most often used by organizations such as businesses or schools and are
commonly found at the heart of the organization on serve Some examples are given
below
1. Network Server
2. Mainframe Computer
3. Minicomputer
4. Super Computer.
9

Network Server

A network sever is usually a powerful personal computer with special software and
equipment that enable it to function as the primary computer in the network.
OR
A computer designed to act as central repository and help in providing various resources
like hardware access, disk space, printer access, etc.,. to other computers in the network.
Most Organizations networks are based on personal computers. Individual users have
their own desktop computers, which are connected to one or more centralized computers,
called network Server.
10

Features of Network server

More memory and storage capacity.

• high performance personal computers.
• Reliable and fast hard disks
• powerful processors and high amounts of available RAM.
• Can also act as a central file storage unit.
• Network server is also capable of running an intranet.
• Some of the common examples of network servers are FTP servers and web servers.
11

Mainframe Computers

A mainframe is an ultra high-performance computer made for high-volume,

processor-intensive computing. They are typically used by large businesses and
for scientific purposes.
Mainframes are a type of computer that generally are known for their large size,
amount of storage, processing power and high level of reliability
12

Mini Computer

Computer that is smaller, less expensive, and less powerful than a mainframe or
supercomputer, but more expensive and more powerful than a personal
computer.
Minicomputers are used for
• Scientific & engineering computations
• Business-transaction processing
• File handling
• Database management.
13

Super Computers

A supercomputer(extremely powerful
computer) is a computer that performs at or
near the currently highest operational rate
for computers.
Traditionally, supercomputers have been
used for scientific and engineering
applications that must handle very large
databases or do a great amount of
computation (or both).
14

Computer in society

Computer have changed our world or the way we do everything.

• Manage a list of Contacts
• Make Notes on the fly / Send faxes and e-mail.
