Factor Theorem
(x – a) is a factor of f(x), if f(a) = 0.
x – 2 is a factor of 4x3 - 8x2 - x + 2
Given the equation f(x) = 4x3 - 8x2 - x + 2
Exam When x = 2, find f(2).
ple:
Soluti f(2) = 4(2)3 – 8(2)2 – (2) + 2
on: = 4(8) – 8(4) – 2 + 2
= 32 – 32 – 2 + 2
=0
x – 3 is a factor of x3 - 6x2 + 11x - 6
Given the equation f(x) = x3 - 6x2 + 11x - 6
Exam When x = 3, find f(3).
ple:
Soluti f(3) = (3)3 – 6(3)2 + 11(3) - 6
on: = 27 – 6(9) + 11(3) - 6
= 27 – 54 + 33 - 6
=0
Worked Example Your Turn
If , then f(1)=0. So (x-1) is a factor of .
Soluti
on:
Let f(x) = x 3
+ ax2 + bx + 30
If we factorise x2 + 3x – 10, we will get (x – 2)(x + 5).
So, if x2 + 3x – 10 is a factor of f(x), then (x – 2) and (x + 5) are
also the factor of f(x).
Soluti
on:
So, if x + 3x – 10 is a factor of f(x), then (x – 2) and (x + 5) are
