Technical Report Writing

Prof. Dr. Eng. Omar H. Al-Sakaf

Lecture 5 - 15. December 2024

Exercise
WHICH title is good and which is bad and WHY?
1. The Impact of AI on Customer Service in the Retail
Industry.
2. A Study of a Thing.
3. An Investigation into the Potential Benefits and Drawbacks
of Implementing a New Project Management Methodology.
4. A Comparative Analysis of Machine Learning Algorithms for
Image Classification.
5. The Perfect Algorithm.

2
Summary
• Sometimes referred to as the executive summary.

•Provides a brief overview of the substance of the report

(usually no more than half a page).

• It is not an introduction to the topic.

•It should outline all the key features of your report (topic,
what you did and how you did it, main outcomes of your
work).
3
Summary

• States the topic of the report.

• Outlines your approach to the task if applicable.

• Gives the most important findings of your research or

investigation, or the key aspects of your design.

• States the main outcomes or conclusions. 4

Sample Summary
(Read the following summaries and select the best one for the report)

5
•Summary A is weak. Although it clearly states the topic of
the report, it then only outlines the type of information
included in the report.

•It should briefly outline the key features of the technology and
the distinguishing features of the two designs as well as the
outcome of the work; for example, a recommendation of one
of the designs.

•Summary B is superior because it contains a summary of

the actual information contained in the report, and gives the
conclusion.

1. Short Technical Report:
A Comparative Analysis of Machine Learning
Algorithms for Image Classification
Summary:
This report investigates the performance of different machine
learning algorithms (e.g., Convolutional Neural Networks,
Support Vector Machines, and Random Forests) for image
classification tasks. The study compares the accuracy,
precision, recall, and F1-score of these algorithms on a
standard image dataset. The results indicate that
Convolutional Neural Networks consistently outperform other
algorithms, especially for large and complex datasets.
8
2. Short Technical Report:
Energy Efficiency Optimization in Data
Centers
Summary:
This report explores techniques to improve energy
efficiency in data centers. The study analyzes the
impact of various factors, such as server utilization,
cooling systems, and power management strategies, on
energy consumption. The report proposes a dynamic
power management scheme that can significantly
reduce energy costs without compromising
performance. 9
3. Short Technical Report:
A Novel Approach to Natural Language
Processing for Sentiment Analysis
Summary:
This report introduces a novel approach to sentiment
analysis using deep learning techniques. The proposed
method combines bidirectional Long Short-Term
Memory (LSTM) networks with attention mechanisms to
capture contextual information and improve sentiment
classification accuracy. Experimental results
demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach
compared to traditional methods. 10
4. Short Technical Report:
Experimental Investigation of Heat Transfer
Enhancement in Heat Exchangers Using Nanofluids
Summary:
This report investigates the potential of nanofluids to
enhance heat transfer in heat exchangers. Experiments
were conducted using various nanofluids (e.g., water-
based nanofluids with copper oxide nanoparticles) at
different concentrations and flow rates. The results
indicate that nanofluids can significantly improve heat
transfer coefficients compared to conventional fluids,
leading to more efficient heat exchangers. 11
