Definition of
choking
Choking is a medical
emergency where a person’s
airway becomes blocked by an
object, causing difficulty or
inability to breathe. This can be
due to food, a foreign object, or
swelling of the throat.

Causes for
choking
1. Food: Swallowing large pieces of food without
properly chewing, or eating quickly.
2. Foreign Objects: Small objects such as toys, coins, or
pen caps can be swallowed accidentally, especially by
children.
3. Liquids: Drinking too quickly or when laughing can
cause choking.
4. Medical Conditions: Conditions like dysphagia
(difficulty swallowing), neurological disorders, or injuries
can increase the risk of choking
First aid for choking:
First Aid for Choking in Adults

Step 1: Ask, "Are you choking?"

Step 2: perform the Heimlich maneuver:
• Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around
their waist.
• Make a fist with one hand and place it just above the
person’s navel.
• Grasp the fist with your other hand and perform
upward abdominal thrusts.
• Repeat until the object is expelled or when the person
can breath again
If you are choking and alone

- Grasp your fist with

- Make a fist and place it your other hand and lean - Push your fist inward
just above your navel. over a hard surface, like a and upward
chair or countertop.
First Aid for Choking in Infants
Step 1: Assess the situation and call for help if
necessary.
Step 2: Perform back blows and chest
thrusts:
• Lay the infant face down on your forearm, supporting the

head and neck.

• Give 5 back blows between the infant's shoulder blades

with the palm of your hand.

• Turn the infant over and give 5 chest thrusts.

Unconscious person with choking

- Lay them on their back on a firm

surface.
- Call emergency services immediately.
- Begin CPR if trained:
1. Open the airway and check for
breathing.
2. Give 30 chest compressions.
3. Check the mouth for the object.
4. Give 2 rescue breaths.
Explanation about the process to follow whenever someone is chocked
Treating pregnant women with choking

1. *Encourage Coughing*: If she can cough, encourage her to keep trying

to clear the object.
2. 2. *Back Blows*: - Stand slightly behind her and support her chest
with one hand. - Use the heel of your other hand to give up to 5 firm
blows between her shoulder blades.
3. 3. *Chest Thrusts*: - Stand behind her, place your arms under her
armpits and around her chest.
4. - Place your fist on her breastbone (above the ribs), and push inward
and upward with quick thrusts.Remember to avoid pressing directly on
the belly to protect the baby.
Steps to prevent choking:
- Cut food into small pieces.
- Chew food thoroughly before swallowing.
- Avoid talking or laughing while eating.
- Keep small objects out of reach of children.
- Supervise young children during meals and
playtime.
Conclusion

- Summary: In choking emergencies, timely intervention

can be life-saving. For adults and children over one year
old, begin with back blows and abdominal thrusts. If the
person becomes unconscious, call emergency services
and start CPR immediately. Always seek professional
medical help after any choking incident, as further
assessment is necessary. Knowing these basic steps can
make a critical difference in a choking emergency.
*Final Note: Take a first aid course to become more
confident and prepared for emergencies.
