DEONTOLOGY
 Deontology is a universal ethical theory that considers whether
an action itself is right or wrong.
 concerned with intentions without giving consideration to
consequences
 Duty based and right-based
Deontology - Immanuel Kant

• comes from the Greek word deon which

means “being necessary”
• Study of duty and the necessity of
fulfilling obligation
Rational Will – faculty to act in a manner that is consistent with
our reason.

HUMAN
• Sentience – refers to an organism’s ability to perceive and navigate its external
environment
• Rational – construct ideas and thoughts
• Agency (Human Freedom)– the ability of a person to act based on her intentions
and rational deliberation.
• Moral agents – strengthening of our rational will.
• Rational Will – conditioning of it so that it will be strengthening.

Imperative • Categorical • Hypothetical

Imperative is

command
1. act only according to that maxim through which you can at the same time

will that it become a universal law.

2. So act that you use humanity, in your own person as well as in the person
of any other, always at the same time as an end, never merely as a means.
3. every rational being must so act as if he were through his maxim always a

lawmaking member in the universal kingdom of ends (“Kingdom of Ends”

formulation)

Formulation of Categorical Imperative

MAXIM – is a general principle or rule upon which we act
Situation for Categorical Imperative 1:act only according
to that maxim through which you can at the same time
will that it become a universal law.

Making a false promise to secure a loan. The maxim is

“whenever I can benefit from doing so, I should make a
false promise”.
PERFECT DUTY- is

circumstances.
Situation for Categorical Imperative 2:
So act that you use humanity, in your own person as well as in the
person of any other, always at the same time as an end, never
merely as a means.

Jill has a right to speech because she is a person,

consequently the right will not disappear if she
changes her location, personal circumstances,
relationship status etc.
Categorical Imperative 3:
every rational being must so act as if he were
through his maxim always a lawmaking member
in the universal kingdom of ends (“Kingdom of
Ends” formulation)
Examples:
• Everyone is equal
• Jill has a right to life
• If lying is wrong, then it is wrong in all instances.
Deontology encompasses two kinds of
approaches:
1. Duty-based
2. Rights-based.

Duty-based Rights-based
 Ethics says that there  ethics insists that you
are universal moral need to respect
norms or rules, and it is individual’s human rights
essential that everyone and never treat people
follows them. as a means to an end.
Moral Conviction
 Believing that it is one’s duty to do the right thing
 Duty – to be obligated to do something
Example:
Whistle blowing – kind of speaking the truth to power and
it happens often in the workplace that an authority figure
violates a law or makes an unethical decision
Assessment:
SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS:
Analyze the situation based on the right thing to do using the concept of Deontology. Please
elaborate your answer.
1. There is someone want to kill you because you owe him a big amount of money. You’re
not afford to pay it because he give you a high interest. What should you do?
2. Your friends ask you if she is beautiful in her dress. If you will not tell a lie, you can say
that she is not beautiful in her dress, but your friend get offended. If you say that she is
beautiful, you lie to your friend. What is the best thing that you can do?
3. You are one of the janitor in the famous hotel. You were cleaning the room of your
client who had just left the hotel when you noticed that he left his bag with a cash of
100,000 pesos. You also see that there is a calling card inside his bag. At that time, your
